On March 11, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration issued a notice on the National Automobile and Consumer goods recall in 2021. According to the regulations on the Administration of defective Automobile products recall, a total of 232 car recalls were conducted in China in the past 2021, an increase of 16.6 percent over the same period last year, involving 8.736 million vehicles, an increase of 28.8 percent.

Among them, there were 54 recalls affected by the defect investigation of the General Administration of Market Supervision, involving 2.561 million vehicles, accounting for 29.3% of the total number of recalls in the whole year. By the end of 2021, China has implemented a total of 2423 vehicle recalls, involving 91.3 million vehicles.

The State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration released that the reasons for the recall are divided into three categories, including from the perspective of defect clues, from the perspective of the assembly involved in the defect and from the perspective of the cause of the defect. Specifically, in terms of defect clues, the General Administration of Market Supervision received 42886 automotive product defect clues in 2021, involving engine assembly (32.3%), driveline (17.6%), body (17.6%), electrical equipment (15.3%), etc.; in terms of assemblies involved in defects, engines and electronics are the main defect-producing components, accounting for 84.3% of the total recall. 50 recalls were carried out due to engine assembly defects, involving 3.713 million vehicles, accounting for 42.5% of the total recall; 54 recalls due to electronic and electrical defects, involving 3.65 million vehicles, accounting for 41.8% of the total recalls; 21 recalls due to brake system defects, involving 510000 vehicles, accounting for 5.8% of the total recall In terms of the causes of defects, there were 141 recalls for manufacturing reasons, involving 1.343 million vehicles, accounting for 15.4% of the total recall; 91 recalls for design reasons, involving 7.393 million vehicles, accounting for 84.6% of the total recall.

2021 defect involves quantity distribution of assembly recall

It is worth mentioning that as more and more car companies abandon fuel vehicles to invest heavily in electric vehicles, the recall rate of new energy vehicles has also risen. According to data released by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, recalls of new energy vehicles accounted for 9.5% of the total recalls in 2021.

According to statistics, there were 59 recalls of new energy vehicles in China in 2021, an increase of 31.1 percent over the same period last year, and 830000 vehicles were involved, an increase of 75.9 percent over the same period last year. Among them, from the defect clue, 3033 cases of new energy vehicle defect clues were reported, reflecting that the problems of power battery, motor and electronic control system accounted for 52.5% of the new energy vehicle defect clues.

The automobile industry is concerned that the recall of new energy vehicles accounts for 9.5% of the total recall batches is in a relatively high recall rate, after all, compared with fuel vehicles, new energy vehicles have just begun. Take Tesla as an example. According to statistics from the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, the details of Tesla's recall in China in 2021 are as follows:

(1) on February 5, 2021, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 20428 imported Model S vehicles from September 18, 2013 to February 20, 2018, and a total of 15698 imported Model X vehicles from March 12, 2016 to February 16, 2018.

(2) on June 3, 2021, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 311 imported Model 3 electric vehicles manufactured from January 12, 2019 to November 20, 2019, and a total of 423 imported Model 3 electric vehicles produced from February 2, 2019 to November 20, 2019.

(3) on June 26, 2021, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 35665 imported Model 3 electric vehicles produced between January 12, 2019 and November 27, 2019; Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 211256 domestic Model 3 electric vehicles produced during the period from December 19, 2019 to June 7, 2021. A total of 38599 domestic Model Y electric vehicles were produced from January 1, 2021 to June 7, 2021.

(4) on November 5, 2021, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 91 imported Model 3 vehicles that were manufactured from February 2, 2019 to October 20, 2019.

(5) on December 3, 2021, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 21599 domestic Model Y electric vehicles produced during the period from February 4, 2021 to October 30, 2021.

(VI) on December 31, 2021, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled some imported Model S electric vehicles from January 21, 2015 to November 18, 2020, a total of 19697; Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled some imported Model 3 electric vehicles from October 4, 2018 to November 20, 2019, a total of 35836 vehicles. Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 144208 domestic Model 3 electric vehicles manufactured between October 14, 2019 and December 27, 2020.

To sum up, although Tesla's sales in the domestic market reached record highs many times during 2021, he recalled a total of 6 times in China, which is equivalent to the frequency of recalls every two months. According to the concerned statistics of the automobile industry, the number of Tesla recalls accounts for the vast majority of the total recall of new energy vehicles, with a total recall of 543811 electric vehicles, covering imported Model 3/Model S and domestic Model 3/Model Y, far exceeding the recall level of the same period in 2020.

By the end of 2021, statistics show that the number of new energy vehicles in the country has reached 7.84 million, accounting for 2.6 per cent of the total. So far, a total of 229 new energy vehicles have been recalled, involving 1.98 million vehicles.
