AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)03/18 Report--

As an important passive safety device of automobile products, airbag can distribute the impact force evenly in the head and chest, prevent the fragile passenger body from directly colliding with the car body, greatly reduce the possibility of injury and effectively protect passengers. However, according to 1818 Golden Eye media reports, a Passat after hitting the rear wheel of the truck caused serious damage to the front of the car, three people on board were injured to varying degrees, and the owner was confused that Passat's airbag did not eject.

Master Wu said that when he was driving Passat straight through an intersection without street lights, a truck in the opposite lane suddenly turned. Due to the lack of braking on the rainy day, Passat finally hit the rear wheel of the truck, causing serious damage to the front of the truck. At that time, a total of three people on board were injured to varying degrees. The co-pilot's lips were cracked and the back passenger's face was bruised, while Master Wu's own cervical vertebra and back had been very painful. According to the accident identification issued by the traffic police, the truck driver is mainly responsible for the accident.

However, what puzzled Master Wu was that the speed was about 60km/h, Passat was hit beyond recognition, but none of the airbags popped up, and Master Wu thought there was a problem with Passat.

In response to Master Wu's doubts, the after-sales manager of the 4S store said that the pop-up of the airbag had a trigger point, which would definitely pop up if it was encountered, but the Passat driven by Master Wu got into the bottom of the truck and just avoided the trigger point, so the strength was not strong enough, and the manufacturer judged that it did not touch the trigger point, and if it was a frontal impact, it could definitely pop up. In addition, the after-sales manager also issued a letter from SAIC-Volkswagen, which mentioned, "We think that the airbag system of the vehicle is working normally. In the accident, the frontal collision energy perceived by the airbag controller of the vehicle does not meet the condition of opening the airbag on the front of the vehicle. Therefore, the airbag of the vehicle is not instructed to be inflated. The after-sales manager said that if Master Wu does not approve the test report issued by the manufacturer, he can also ask a third-party inspection agency to identify the vehicle. After on-site communication, Master Wu also agreed to this plan.

As we all know, the airbag mainly protects the head or other important parts of the driver and passenger in the event of a collision, but sometimes there is a collision, especially in a serious accident, but the airbag still does not pop up. What's going on? First of all, the airbag is a passive safety system device. when the vehicle is hit by a certain impact force, the pressure sensor of the airbag system and the acceleration sensor in the restraint system ECU are used to judge whether it should be ejected or not. when the two signals are received at the same time, the airbag will pop up instantly, so that the driver's upper body is wrapped in gas, reducing the impact on the body and greatly reducing the injury rate. Of course, like Master Wu's Passat, the front has been hit beyond recognition and still does not have an airbag to eject, which may also be due to the following reasons: first, there is something wrong with the airbag itself, which is common to a certain extent. for example, many car owners neglect the inspection of airbags when maintaining their vehicles, which may make it difficult for the vehicles to play a role at critical moments. The second is the reason for the design of the airbag itself. Different automobile manufacturers have different settings for the explosion conditions of the airbag. If the trigger threshold is not reached, the airbag will not pop up. Third, the detonation of the airbag needs to be triggered to the collision sensor, generally, the airbag will eject when there is a serious collision in the front, but if the collision angle of the vehicle is wrong, such as the headlights and the front wheel, the airbag will not necessarily eject.

Therefore, there is a certain basis for the after-sales manager and SAIC-Volkswagen's explanation that the airbag did not eject, because the vehicle was "squeezed in" rather than hit directly. However, from the netizens' comments, I do not agree with the explanation of the person in charge, because Passat's front face has been hit beyond recognition, so how can it pop up. Some netizens said that there was no major injury to the occupants of the car like this, indicating that it really did not reach the pop-up standard, and that the injury might be greater if it popped up.

At present, there is no standard for airbag in China, and each car company will set the standard of airbag ejection according to the model. According to experience, whether the airbag can eject normally or not is directly related to the collision angle and speed. So what do you think of the Passat airbag that didn't eject?
