AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)04/04 Report--
Tesla has informed workers and suppliers that there is no way to resume production at his Shanghai plant on Monday, according to Reuters. According to the notice, Monday's production plan has now been cancelled. The notice did not specify the reason, nor did it say when the company expected to resume production. In addition, several media reports revealed that Tesla had informed employees by email on April 3 that they were required to stay at home and abide by community regulations because the epidemic was still severe. Tesla has not responded to the news yet.
From 0 to 24:00 on April 3, there were 425 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Shanghai, including 71 cases from asymptomatic infection to confirmed cases, according to the latest report of the National Health Commission. The cumulative number of confirmed cases reached 7591, and the number of new asymptomatic cases was 8585. It can be seen that the situation of COVID-19 epidemic in Shanghai is still grim.
Earlier, due to the influence of Shanghai's epidemic prevention policy, Tesla has announced several suspensions of production since March. China has tightened restrictions on COVID to contain the latest outbreak, Reuters reported on March 16. Tesla stopped production at his Shanghai factory for two days. On March 28th, Tesla's Shanghai factory announced the suspension of production for another 4 days. Subsequently, due to the impact of the epidemic, production was originally planned to stop for four days on the 28th to March 31, but due to a change in policy, Tesla cancelled the production plan from April 1 to April 3 and resumed production on April 4. Tesla's Shanghai factory has been shut down for seven days.
It is understood that Tesla's Shanghai factory is Tesla's second overseas super factory, which mainly produces Model 3 and Model Y models. According to relevant data, Tesla Shanghai factory delivered 484000 vehicles in 2021, an increase of 235% over the same period last year, accounting for 51.7% of Tesla's total global delivery volume, making it the first single market for Tesla in the world. Tesla relies on the Shanghai factory to deliver 484000 new cars throughout the year, of which 321000 are retail in China, and the remaining 163000 are mainly exported to Japan, Europe and other countries. In the Chinese market, the domestic retail of Model Y and Model 3 are 169853 and 150890 respectively in 2021. Tesla sold 59846 and 56515 vehicles in China in January and February 2022, with exports of 40500 and 33315, respectively, according to the Federation of passengers. Delivery in China accounted for 37.5% of the total global market in the previous two months. It is not difficult to see that the operation of the Shanghai factory, as the second super factory of Tesla, is very important to Tesla.
Yesterday, Tesla's official Weibo released delivery data for the first quarter of this year. Tesla delivered 310048 cars worldwide and produced 305407 cars in the first quarter. Despite continuing supply chain challenges and factory shutdowns, Tesla produced more than 305000 cars and delivered more than 310000 cars worldwide, Tesla said. Although delivery in the first quarter of 2022 was significantly higher than that in the first quarter of last year, delivery and production in the same period last year were 184800 and 180338, respectively. However, compared with the fourth quarter of 2021, the production capacity and delivery of Model 3 and Model Y decreased by 1542 and 1526, respectively. "given that Tesla usually increases delivery at the end of the quarter, we think the Shanghai epidemic will have a greater impact on it," said Dan Levy, an analyst at Credit Suisse.
Tesla CEO Musk had earlier tweeted that China's COVID-19 epidemic and widespread supply chain problems had made the first quarter "extremely difficult" after Tesla delivered a record number of cars. At present, Tesla's Shanghai super factory is still in a state of shutdown, and it is unknown when production will resume, which will also bring uncertainty to Tesla's delivery volume in the second quarter, or drag down Tesla's annual sales performance. After all, the Shanghai factory produced more than half of Tesla's total car sales in 2021, surpassing the Fremont plant. The multiple shutdowns in March this year will also affect Tesla's delivery volume in the second quarter.
