On April 7, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration issued a recall notice. Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. decided to recall some imported and domestic Model 3 electric vehicles from January 11, 2019 to January 25, 2022, according to the regulations on the recall of defective Automobile products and the measures for the implementation of the regulations on the recall of defective Automobile products. A total of 127785 vehicles (including 34207 imported Model 3 vehicles and 93578 domestic Model 3 vehicles).

According to the official website, there may be slight manufacturing differences in the power semiconductor components of the rear motor inverter of vehicles within the scope of this recall, and the manufacturing differences of some vehicles after using them for a period of time may lead to the failure of the rear inverter, causing the inverter not to control the current normally. When this fault occurs when the vehicle is in the parking state, it will cause the vehicle not to start; when the fault occurs in the vehicle driving state, it will cause the vehicle to lose its driving power, and in extreme cases, it may increase the risk of vehicle collision and there are hidden dangers.

In view of the above defects, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will upgrade the motor control software for vehicles within the recall range free of charge through vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology. For the vehicles that cannot be recalled through the vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology, the relevant users will be contacted through the service center to upgrade the motor control software for the vehicle, so as to closely monitor the rear motor inverter of the vehicle, and replace the related inverter free of charge in time, so as to eliminate the hidden danger.

It should be noted that the recall was carried out in the context of the defect investigation initiated by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration. Affected by the investigation, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. decided to take recall measures to eliminate safety risks. Tesla reminded: before the vehicle recall upgrade software, users should drive the vehicle carefully and contact Tesla service center for maintenance as soon as the recall is implemented.

It is worth mentioning that there has been feedback from car owners on this issue recently. In Tesla's Model 3 circle, a Model 3 owner revealed that he had encountered a "vehicle sudden stop accident" while driving on the highway. According to the owner's own account, his vehicle was driving in the tunnel at a speed of 100mph before stalling, while Model 3 suddenly showed "the vehicle cannot continue to drive, please stop immediately" without warning. Because the vehicle is followed, in order to prevent the vehicle from stopping suddenly, the owner stepped on the switch deeply but the vehicle did not respond, which immediately turned on the emergency flasher and changed two lanes in a row after half a second. Slowed down in a short time and parked the vehicle in the emergency lane. The owner said that half of the car was still in other lanes because the vehicle had completely lost its power. Fortunately, the accident caused no casualties, when the co-driver was sitting on the owner's sister and her three-month-old child.

The owner said that after the car stopped, he immediately contacted the staff of Tesla, but they were all told that "no similar situation had been encountered" and suggested calling Tesla after sale, while Tesla also said after sale that "there was no solution" and asked the owner to call a tow truck. At present, the Model 3 has been pulled to Tesla after-sales processing center, according to the owner, Tesla initially communicated the fault code to the inverter.

According to the owner's statement, Tesla initially confirmed that the inverter failure caused the accident, but there was no explanation as to how the inverter caused the vehicle to get out of control. In response to the accident, the car owner put forward a request to return the car, and Tesla also initially agreed to the request, but the amount of the refund was not particularly satisfactory. Finally, the owner said, my luck is really not that kind of luck of one in a hundred thousand, the problem may not have broken out on a large scale, and I feel that these cars may soon be asked to be recalled.
