Tesla plans to resume two shifts at the Shanghai factory from May 16 to try to restore factory capacity to pre-outbreak levels, Reuters reported today. It is understood that the news came from Reuters seeing an internal memo from Tesla that Tesla hopes to increase the daily production of the Shanghai factory to 2600 vehicles by resuming the two-shift system. It is worth noting that since March, due to the impact of the Shanghai epidemic, Tesla's Shanghai factory has also stopped production many times. According to an earlier report on the concern of the automobile industry, Tesla's Shanghai factory stopped production for two consecutive days on March 16 and 17, stopped production again on March 28 because of epidemic prevention and control, and did not resume production until April 19, which has been more than half a month. According to Tesla's average daily production capacity of 2000 cars, Tesla's production loss may exceed 40, 000 vehicles. If two shifts are really implemented, it also means that Tesla's Shanghai factory will enter a state of 24-hour uninterrupted production, and there will be a certain increase in production capacity.

At present, although Tesla's Shanghai factory resumed work and production on April 19th, according to a relevant person in charge of Tesla earlier, its complete vehicle parts are still in stock for about a week, and are actively promoting more than 100 suppliers to resume work and smooth the logistics industry. From this point of view, Tesla's production will still face challenges, if the supply of spare parts is not timely or will cause Tesla to stop production again, just resuming work after the suspension of production also needs to go through the production climbing period, and there is also a certain lag in production.

According to Tesla's Chinese official website, the current delivery cycle of each version of Model Y ranges from 10 weeks to 20 weeks, and that of each version of Model 3 ranges from 16 weeks to 24 weeks, of which the delivery cycle of Model 3 rear wheel drive version is as long as 20 to 24 weeks.

Tesla Shanghai Factory, as one of Tesla's most important automobile production bases, mainly produces Model 3 and SUV Model Y cars. According to relevant data, the Tesla Shanghai factory delivered 484000 vehicles in 2021, an increase of 23.5% over the same period last year, accounting for 51.7% of Tesla's total global delivery volume. Of these, 321000 are sold domestically, while the remaining 163000 are mainly exported to Japan, Europe and other countries. In the Chinese market, there will be 169853 Model Y retail vehicles and 150890 Model 3 retail vehicles in 2021. Compared with Tesla's global delivery volume of 936000 vehicles in 2021 and 484000 vehicles delivered by the Shanghai factory, Tesla accounts for more than half of Tesla's global sales. On May 3, it was announced that Tesla China will build a second factory in Shanghai, which will increase the annual production capacity of 450000 vehicles. However, for the news, Tesla related people responded: just expand production, not the second factory. It is not difficult to see that Tesla is working hard to expand production capacity.

Tesla sold 65184 vehicles (of which 60 were exported) in March, up 85 per cent from a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of passengers.
