According to a report in Chinese philanthropist magazine, the incident was caused by a sewage problem at BYD's Changsha plant.

According to Tianyan, Changsha BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. was established in August 2009. The company is located at 88 Environmental Protection East Road, Yuhua District, Changsha City, Hunan Province. Its main business scope is automobile, car body manufacturing and so on. As we all know, BYD has a number of factories in China, and the importance of the Changsha factory to BYD is self-evident. It is understood that BYD Changsha plant was first put into production in 2012, is currently BYD across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles in the two major areas, the most complete product line of new energy vehicle production strategic base, but also BYD DM-i system in the country's only production base. On the evening of May 6, local residents gathered in front of BYD No. 2 to protest, urging BYD to solve the problem. Subsequently, according to the video posted online, the staff of the BYD Changsha factory said when negotiating with the residents: "the early stage of the first phase of the project is large, but more than 10 billion yuan has been invested before and after, and it is not realistic to stop production." The industrial park of BYD's Yuhua District in Changsha was put into operation in 2012 and its emissions comply with relevant state regulations and standards, BYD's official Weibo statement said on the evening of May 7. In some residential areas close to the industrial park, or the existence of odor, the company has taken relevant measures and actively improved. However, in view of the nosebleed caused by excessive emissions, BYD said it was a malicious fabrication of the connection, the company has called the police, and will pursue the legal liability of the relevant personnel.

It is worth noting that in January this year, the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Ecological Environment issued a public notice on the comprehensive control of volatile organic compounds in key enterprises, which included details of the rectification and improvement of pollutant emissions at BYD's Changsha plant. The public notice table shows that before the rectification, the production of volatile organic compounds (tmax a) of Changsha BYD Co., Ltd. was 1264.202; the organized emissions of volatile organic compounds (tmax a) was 708.355; and the unorganized emissions of volatile organic compounds (tmax a) was 87.381.

In accordance with the rectification requirements, BYD Changsha factory will carry out rectification from the source, painting process, recovery and VOCs monitoring and other links. Among them, the passenger car paint to water-based paint, the new passenger car painting production line using non-medium coating process and other rectification measures are expected to be completed in October this year. This means that the rectification of VOC emissions at BYD's Changsha plant has not been completely completed.

According to the financial report, BYD achieved revenue of 216.142 billion yuan in 2021, an increase of 38.02% over the same period last year, while net profit was 3.045 billion yuan, down 28.08% from the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2022, BYD achieved revenue of 66.83 billion yuan, an increase of 63.02 percent over the same period last year, and a net profit of 808.4 million yuan, an increase of 240.59 percent over the same period last year. In terms of sales, BYD sold 593700 new energy passenger vehicles in 2021, an increase of 231.60 percent over the same period last year, and a cumulative sales of 390200 new energy vehicles from January to April 2022, an increase of 397.63 percent over the same period last year.

In the 2021 Social responsibility report, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu wrote: in order to promote the development goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutralization" and implement the Paris Agreement on climate change, BYD has demonstrated the leading enterprises of new energy vehicles, strengthen corporate carbon emissions action and management, and speed up the low-carbon transformation of transportation and manufacturing through green technologies, products and solutions. By the end of the year, BYD had sold more than 1.5 million new energy vehicles and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 8.92 million tons, equivalent to planting 750 million trees, realizing the commercial operation of the world's first Yunba demonstration line and contributing effective solutions to global air pollution and traffic congestion control.

As a leading company of new energy vehicles in China and a Chinese car company that regards social environmental protection as its responsibility, BYD's factory has been questioned about environmental pollution. On the issue of factory pollution in Yuhua District of BYD Changsha City, in the early morning of May 8, the standing Committee of Yuhua District Committee held an emergency meeting overnight.
