AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)05/10 Report--

Tesla China sold only 1512 vehicles in China in April, down 97.70% from 65814 in March, according to data released by the association today. In April, all Tesla sales in Shanghai were domestic delivery, and export sales were 0. In response to the April sales slump, Tesla responded that Tesla is different from traditional manufacturers 'stock car model, Tesla direct sales model will be vehicles from the production line directly to users, there will be no inventory situation. In April, due to the impact of the epidemic on Shanghai Super Factory, the production end directly affected the delivery end. In addition, it also indicates that some vehicles of Shanghai Super Factory are being shipped to Asia-Pacific region, and other large-scale products will be loaded in the near future and exported to Europe and other places. "However, in the case of a significant reduction in cross-border logistics efficiency and transportation obstruction, this part of the vehicle has not yet been recorded as a completed export."

Recently, due to the impact of Shanghai epidemic situation, production has been stopped for many times since March, and production did not resume until April 19. The shutdown time has been more than half a month. Based on Tesla's daily production capacity of 2000 cars, the Shanghai epidemic has cost Tesla about 45,000 new car production capacity. It is worth noting that this morning, a person familiar with the matter revealed that Tesla's Shanghai Super Factory was shut down again due to supply chain problems. Subsequently, Tesla China responded that it had not received any relevant notification at present.

On May 8, according to media reports, Tesla's Shanghai plant is expected to resume production capacity in mid-May, raising it to pre-epidemic levels. On May 6, Reuters also reported that Tesla plans to resume two shifts at its Shanghai plant from May 16 to restore plant capacity to pre-outbreak levels as much as possible. It is understood that the news comes from Reuters to see Tesla an internal memo shows that Tesla hopes to restore the two-shift system to increase the daily output of the Shanghai plant to 2600 vehicles. However, Tesla has not responded to the news.

According to relevant data, Tesla Shanghai factory is located in Shanghai Lingang Heavy Equipment Industrial Zone, which is Tesla's second super factory overseas, with a scale of more than 1200 mu. It includes four areas: vehicle production area, test area, parts production area and joint workshop. Its estimated annual production capacity is 450,000 vehicles in 2021, mainly producing Model 3 and SUV Model Y. According to relevant data, Tesla's Shanghai factory delivered 484,000 vehicles in 2021, up 235% year-on-year and accounting for 51.7% of Tesla's total global deliveries. Among them, 321,000 vehicles were retailed in China, and the remaining 163,000 vehicles were mainly exported to Japan, Europe and other countries. In the Chinese market, 169853 Model Y and 150890 Model 3 will be sold in 2021. Tesla delivered 936,000 vehicles worldwide in 2021, according to Tesla official data, with Tesla's Shanghai plant accounting for nearly 60 percent of Tesla's global deliveries.

At present, although Tesla Shanghai Super Factory has resumed production on April 19, Tesla Shanghai factory production will still face challenges. Earlier, according to Tesla a relevant person in charge revealed that its vehicle parts still have about a week of inventory, is actively promoting more than 100 suppliers to resume production, and smooth logistics industry. It is not difficult to see that if the supply of parts is not timely or will lead to Tesla stopping production again, it will also need to go through the production climbing period just after stopping production, and there is also a certain lag for production. In addition, because Tesla adopts direct sales mode, vehicles are order-based production, after offline will be delivered directly from the factory through the delivery center to the owner, so affected by the epidemic, Tesla delivery time is also affected. Some car owners revealed to the media that they ordered a new domestic Tesla car in December last year, which has not yet been delivered.

As can be seen from Tesla's official website in China, the delivery cycle of each version of Model Y varies from 10 weeks to 20 weeks, and the delivery cycle of each version of Model 3 varies from 16 weeks to 24 weeks, among which the delivery cycle of Model 3 rear-wheel drive version is as long as 20 weeks to 24 weeks. Tesla Musk has also made it clear that Tesla factories have been undercapacity for several consecutive quarters amid shortages of parts and semiconductor chips, and that this is expected to continue for a year. "If consumers order cars now, they may need to be prepared to wait a year."

Although Tesla's latest financial data shows that Tesla has not been affected, its total revenue in the first quarter of 2022 was $18.756 billion, up 81% year-on-year. Net profit attributable to shareholders was $3.318 billion (about 21.28 billion yuan), up 658% year-on-year, and auto gross margin was 32.9%. But judging from the wholesale numbers released in April, the Shanghai epidemic has had a big impact on Tesla sales and the delivery time of its vehicles has been extended. Tesla CEO Musk has said Tesla deliveries will grow 50 percent this year. Based on Tesla's total sales of 936,000 in 2021, that means Tesla needs to deliver 1.4 million new cars this year. However, if the production capacity of the Shanghai plant fails to recover to the pre-outbreak level as soon as possible, there will be certain challenges in achieving this delivery target.
