Toyota Motor said on its website that due to the closure of the epidemic in Shanghai and supply chain shortages, a number of Toyota factories in Japan will stop production for several days from May 16 to 21, including the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and the Takahara Plant in Tanhara City, Aichi Prefecture, a total of 14 production lines, including Toyota Crown, bZ4X, C-HR, RAV4 and Lexus NX.

According to the shutdown plan announced by Toyota Motor, the longest shutdown time of the eight plants is the Toyota car body Yoshihara factory, which stopped production for a total of six days from the 16th to the 21st, while Toyota Industries had the shortest shutdown time of 2 days, while most of the rest of the factories stopped production for about 5 days. In view of this, Toyota once again announced that its global production target would be cut by about 50, 000 to 700000 vehicles.

This is the second time Toyota has stopped production this month. On April 18, Toyota announced that affected by factors such as the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic and instability in the supply chain, nine Toyota factories and 10 production lines in Japan would face varying degrees of shutdown in May this year. The shutdown time was from May 9 to 28, two of which stopped production for six days. At that time, Toyota said that global production would be reduced by 10% to 750000 vehicles in May this year. Among them, Toyota's domestic production in Japan will fall to 200000 vehicles, and production in overseas markets will fall to 550000 vehicles. The shutdown also directly reduced Toyota's production capacity from 750000 to 700000 vehicles.

Toyota has previously said that the average monthly production from May to July this year is about 800000 vehicles, that is, Toyota is expected to produce about 240vehicles from May to July 2022. It is not known whether the suspension of production at many local factories in May will affect Toyota's sales in fiscal year 2022 (April 2022-March 2023). Toyota stressed that due to the COVID-19 epidemic and semiconductor shortage, it is difficult to predict production in the next few months, but will strive to deliver as many products as possible to customers as soon as possible.

On April 27th, Toyota Motor Group released production and sales figures for March 2022 and fiscal year 2021 (April 2021-March 2022). Toyota sold 9511558 vehicles worldwide in fiscal 2021, up 4.7% from 9087303 in fiscal 2020 and the second-highest annual sales in history, according to the data. In terms of production, Toyota produced 8569549 vehicles worldwide in fiscal 2021, up 4.7 per cent from 8182944 in fiscal 2020. Today Toyota announced its Toyota Group results for fiscal 2021 and its targets for fiscal 2022 (April 2022-March 2023). Toyota Group's sales in fiscal 2021 were 31.3795 trillion yen (1.6192 trillion yuan), up 15.3 percent from a year earlier, while operating profit was 2.9956 trillion yen (154.6 billion yuan), up 36.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the financial report. Net profit was 2,850.1 billion yen (147.1 billion yuan), up 26.9 percent from the same period last year. For its fiscal year 2022 target, Toyota expects sales of 33 trillion yen (1.7028 trillion yuan) and operating profit of 2.4 trillion yen (123.8 billion yuan) in fiscal 2022. In addition, Toyota CFO said it would respond to the rise in material costs by reducing usage and switching to low-cost materials, and avoid raising product prices across the board.

As for its sales target for fiscal year 2022, Toyota expects a global sales target of 10.7 million vehicles for fiscal 2022. In other words, Toyota needs to produce an average of about 892000 vehicles a month to meet its fiscal year target of 10.7 million. Toyota's projected production capacity has fallen to 700000 vehicles in April of fiscal year 2022, and the average monthly production from May to July is only about 800000 vehicles. When Toyota announced its results in February, it also said: "We do not expect the shortage of chips to be resolved soon and may continue into the next fiscal year."
