AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)06/29 Report--

On June 29, Toyota Motor Group released production and sales figures for May 2022. Toyota's global sales fell 9.3 per cent year-on-year to 761466 vehicles in May 2022, the ninth consecutive month of year-on-year decline, according to data. Of these, sales in Japan fell 20.9 per cent year-on-year to 86544 vehicles, while sales in overseas markets fell 7.7 per cent to 674922 vehicles. On the production side, Toyota's global production fell 5.4 per cent year-on-year to 634940 vehicles in May 2022, with Japanese domestic production falling 28.5 per cent to 144204 vehicles.

With regard to the decline in production and sales data in May, Toyota said that it was mainly due to a shortage of parts and components caused by the epidemic and increased demand for semiconductors, which forced some Toyota factories to stop work or cut production. Toyota's sales and production in April were lower than the previous year's level.

Judging from the data, Toyota's overall sales and production in May are not very optimistic. Among them, according to the final plan, Toyota finally decided in May to produce 700000 vehicles worldwide (150000 in Japan and 550000 in overseas markets). However, if the final data show that Toyota actually produced only 634940 vehicles worldwide in May, it was lower than the expected 700000 vehicles, and Japan produced only 144204 vehicles locally. As a result, Toyota's global sales fell 9.3 per cent to 761466 vehicles in May from a year earlier, marking the ninth consecutive month of decline in global sales and 20.9 per cent year-on-year decline in domestic sales in Japan to 86544 vehicles.

In fact, due to the epidemic and parts supply shortages and other factors, Toyota has frequently encountered production stoppages and production cuts since March this year. This month, for example, Toyota initially expected a production capacity of 950000 in June. Due to the fact that Toyota was forced to cut production three times before and after this month, Toyota's production capacity has been cut from 950000 to 750000, with a cumulative production reduction of about 200000 vehicles. Production is still being cut in the coming July, and Toyota announced global production of about 800000 vehicles in July, a reduction of 50, 000 vehicles than previously expected, including about 250000 in Japan and 550000 overseas.

Of course, Toyota is far from the only one troubled by this problem. in the Japanese camp, a number of car companies, including Honda, Nissan, Mazda and so on, have suffered a great impact in terms of production and marketing, as the latest news shows, affected by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and difficulties in purchasing spare parts, Nissan's St. Petersburg plant in northwest Russia has been shut down since March 14. Nissan CEO announced yesterday that it would shut down its vehicle plant in Russia until the end of September.

The frequent shutdowns and production cuts have directly led to a decline in new car sales in the global market of Japanese car companies. Take the Japanese, American and Chinese markets as an example. In the Japanese home market, relevant data show that in mid-May this year, among the eight major Japanese brands, except Mitsubishi, sales of Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Subaru, Mazda and Daifa all showed a year-on-year decline, of which Toyota sales fell 20.9% to 86500 vehicles. Suzuki sales fell 10.9 per cent year-on-year to 6741; Subaru sales fell 27.5 per cent to 3480; Mazda sales fell 49.3 per cent to 3332; Lexus sales fell 30.8 per cent to 3103; and Dafa sales fell 30.1 per cent to 1812. The US market also performed poorly, with Honda sales down 57.3 per cent year-on-year to 75500 vehicles, Toyota sales down 27.3 per cent to 176000 vehicles, Mazda sales down 63.7 per cent to 15300 vehicles and Subaru sales down 24.8 per cent to 42500 vehicles.

In addition, the Chinese market, as an important source of sales for Japanese brands, also declined to a large extent. In May, Toyota's sales in China fell 12.1% to 148500 vehicles compared with the same period last year (GAC Toyota sold 70, 000 vehicles, down 3.1% from the same period last year. FAW Toyota sold 62000 vehicles, down 15.9% from the same period last year; Honda sales in China fell 30.8% to 89000 vehicles. Nissan's sales in China fell 38.0 per cent year-on-year to 68800, while Mazda's sales in China fell 43.8 per cent to 8300.

With regard to the decline in sales of Japanese car companies in May, the Japanese Federation of Automobile sales Associations and the National Federation of Mini-vehicle Associations said that the main reason was the shortage of semiconductors and the difficulties in purchasing parts due to epidemic control in Shanghai. Japanese automakers' production stagnated, which had an impact on new car sales. According to the current trend, Toyota's production reduction caused by the impact of the supply chain continues, and the decline in new car sales has not been improved.
