According to the latest retail data released by the Federation of passengers, sales of new energy narrow passenger vehicles in China from January to June in 2022 were 2.247 million, an increase of 122.4 percent over the same period last year, of which 531000 were delivered in June, an increase of 130.5 percent over the same period last year and 47.8 percent higher than the previous year.
According to the statistics of the Tramway report, the top three companies in sales of new energy vehicles from January to June 2022 are BYD, SAIC GM Wuling and Tesla China, with sales of 633777, 208043 and 197575 respectively. According to statistics, a total of six new energy vehicle companies sold more than 100000 vehicles in the first half of the year, of which BYD is the only one with more than 500000 vehicles. In terms of specific models, Hongguang MINIEV, as a mini car, once again won the top spot in new energy sales, with cumulative sales of 188653 vehicles. BYD has the largest number of models on the list, with 159068 in Song and 146490 in Qin and more than 100000 in Model Y, with 133666.
On July 3, BYD and Tesla simultaneously announced their first-half sales. Data show that in the first half of 2022, Tesla delivered 564743 new cars worldwide and produced 563987, while BYD sold 638157 new energy passenger vehicles and produced 64472 in the first half of the year.
At present, Tesla has only four production cars, of which Model 3 and Model Y are the main sources of sales, while BYD New Energy covers pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, including Qin, Han, Song, Tang and Dolphin models. All in all, Tesla's advantage lies in the all-round development of the global market, while BYD lies in the product layout advantage. However, only from the data analysis, BYD has overtaken Tesla to become the top seller of new energy vehicles in the world in the first half of the year, and this is the first time that Tesla has been overtaken in the past few years. What happened to Tesla? Tesla produced a total of 936000 electric vehicles in 2021, of which 484000 came from Shanghai factories, accounting for 52%. Of these 484000 electric vehicles, 321000 are sold in China, and the remaining 163000 are exported to more than 10 countries such as Japan and Europe. In 2022, Q1 Tesla produced 305000 electric vehicles worldwide, of which 182000 were produced by the Shanghai factory, with an average monthly production capacity of 60, 000. However, since March, affected by the Shanghai epidemic, the Shanghai factory has stopped production for as long as half a month, resulting in factory shutdowns, tight supply chains, disrupted logistics, and shortages of chips and auto parts. Tesla's performance hit rock bottom in the second quarter. However, at present, Tesla's Shanghai factory has been revived with full blood. On April 3, BYD announced that it would stop production of fuel vehicles and focus on pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, becoming the first traditional carmaker in the world to stop selling fuel vehicles. The move led to a sharp surge in sales of BYD New Energy in the second quarter. According to the Federation of passengers, BYD sold 634000 new energy vehicles in the first half of the year, of which 133000 were delivered in June.
According to the official website, BYD's products on sale can be divided into dynasty and ocean series, of which dynasty series include Qin, Tang, Song, Yuan and Han, while ocean series include dolphins, destroyers, 05 and other models. The product price covers the range of 10-300000 yuan, which is the main reason why BYD surpasses Tesla.
Second, there is no shortage of orders for both Tesla and BYD, so production capacity is a key factor limiting the delivery of BYD and Tesla. Unlike Tesla, BYD has sprung up everywhere in China. It has production bases in Shenzhen, Xi'an, Changsha, Changzhou and Fuzhou, while it is located in Hefei, Jinan, Zhengzhou, Shanwei and Xiangyang. This is also the key to BYD's stable growth.
BYD sales more than Tesla, to earn enough limelight for BYD, whether it means that domestic new energy crush Tesla, in fact, it may not be the case. In 20201, Hongguang MINIEV crushed Tesla Model 3 and Model Y with sales of 395000 vehicles, with annual deliveries of 170000 and 151000 respectively, but Hongguang MINIEV is a mini electric car with a price of 30, 000 yuan, which is not in the same dimension as Tesla, and so is BYD. Song and Qin, the hottest models sold by BYD in the first half of this year, were 159000 and 146000 respectively. But the prices of both models are less than 200000 yuan, and most of them are DM-i models, which cannot compete directly with Tesla, that is, BYD grabs the rest of Tesla's market. In addition, if you only consider the pure electric car market, BYD is currently selling dolphins and Han. The sales volume of the former is growing rapidly and has the characteristics of a popular style, but its price starts from 102800 yuan and cannot compete directly with Tesla. At present, the only thing that can compete with Tesla is BYD's Han, positioning medium and large cars. No matter the price, configuration, design, power, etc., can compete head-on with Tesla Model 3. Data show that in the first half of the year, Han delivered a total of 97000 vehicles, of which 65000 were delivered by Han EV and 32000 by Han DM.
Generally speaking, at present, the main battlefield of BYD is still the market of 10-300000 yuan, while Tesla is above 300000 yuan. Although from the total sales point of view, BYD temporarily surpassed Tesla, but it does not mean that BYD crushed Tesla. It is understood that BYD has a sales target of 1.5 million vehicles in 2022, with a target completion rate of 42.5% by June, while Tesla also aims to sell 1.5 million vehicles in 2022, while the target completion rate by the second quarter is 37.6%. This means that Tesla needs to deliver 156000 electric cars per month, which is extremely difficult for Tesla.
