In January 2015, Shanghai Volkswagen announced the official launch of its new compact car, Lingdu, which is based on the MQB platform and sells for between 14.59 and 213900 yuan. As a sports sedan, Lingdu achieved good market performance after its listing, with monthly sales of about 20,000 vehicles at its peak, even competing with the Honda Civic. However, due to Lingdu has not been updated for a long time, unable to meet market demand, Lingdu sales have plummeted. According to statistics, the cumulative sales of SAIC-Volkswagen Lingdu in 2021 is 53666, with an average monthly sales of only more than 4000.

In March 2022, SAIC-Volkswagen launched a new generation of Lingdu L, with a price range of 14.99-189900 yuan. As a replacement model, the Lingdu L adopts a new exterior design, and some of the new cars on the front face use a large front middle net and a penetrating integrated LED headlamp, the front face becomes lower and flattened, the logo can also be lit, and the black honeycomb grid design makes the whole car more sharp and more personalized. As a compact car, the Lingdu L uses a slip-back styling design and is equipped with a "rimless door" that is very rare in the same class. In the rear part, the new car uses a hatchback rear door design, which makes the car running style more conspicuous, and the rear part is also equipped with a penetrating taillight group that echoes with the headlight group, and the car logo can also be lit. This special design style and the popular doll design formed a strong contrast, the appearance of different people have different opinions, but it is indeed younger, can also capture the hearts of some consumers.

In terms of size, the length, width and height of the new car are 4784/1831/1469mm, wheelbase is 2731mm, positioning compact car. As a reference, the length, width and height of the previous generation of Lingdu were 4615/1826/1425mm and the wheelbase was 2656mm. In comparison, the new generation of models are slimmer, with 169mm in length, 44mm in height and 75mm in wheelbase.

In terms of price, the Lingdu L is almost the more expensive compact sedan, with the Changan UNI-V of the same class priced at 10.89-139900 yuan, the Honda Civic at 12.99-187900 yuan, and the Mazda 3 Onksera at 11.59-189900 yuan, which is also much higher than the previous models. However, Lingdu L has few competitors in the market at present, and there are different opinions on appearance design, but there are no frameless doors + hatchback rear doors in the joint venture cars of the same level. Even in luxury brands, the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the BMW 2-Series have only frameless doors and no hatchback rear doors. Or because of this, Lingdu L can get a certain market popularity at a higher price. As for whether Lingdu L's monthly sales are back to its peak or a flash in the pan, the answer will be given in the future.
