According to Lei Jun, in early 2021, the United States announced sanctions against Xiaomi, adding Xiaomi to the DOD (military-related enterprises) list, and the company urgently convened a board of directors to discuss countermeasures. One of the directors proposed to study electric vehicles, so Lei Jun organized a preparatory group of 10 people to investigate all car factories, and finally found that intelligent electric vehicles were originally the integration of automotive industry and consumer electronics. Lei Jun said that he did not want to build a car, and even had the idea of retiring. The purpose of the research was to convince the board of directors to build a mobile phone with peace of mind.
