AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)09/21 Report--

On Sept. 20, the International Energy Agency (IEA) called on its website that sales of internal combustion engine cars will stop in 2035 and achieve a net zero emission scenario by 2050. In addition governments should agree on a timetable to decide when all newly sold road vehicles should achieve zero emissions.

In July 2021, the European Commission put forward a legislative proposal to ban the sale of fuel vehicles in the EU by 2035 to ensure that the EU achieves the goal of net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. In May 2022, the Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted to support the European Commission's proposal to ban the sale of fuel vehicles in the 27 countries of the European Union by 2035, which led to the repeated pull of the EU combustion ban. In June 2022, 27 EU environment ministers agreed on a high-profile plan to ban the sale of fuel vehicles in the EU by 2035. It is believed that as the plan has been supported by the European Parliament, it is expected to be finalized in legal form after a consensus has been reached among EU member states.

In the face of increasingly stringent carbon regulations and global carbon neutralization targets, it may be only a matter of time before automakers stop producing fuel vehicles. In recent years, a number of car companies continue to speed up the electrified transformation, one after another announced a timetable to stop the sale of fuel vehicles.

BYD is the first company in the Chinese market to announce the suspension of fuel cars and the first manufacturer in the world to officially stop production of fuel vehicles. According to the data, BYD sold 168885 new energy passenger vehicles in August, up 210.5% from January to August, up 281.7% from January to August. At present, BYD is the world's largest new energy car manufacturer, entering Japan, Thailand and other countries one after another.

Great Wall followed, with its Harvard brand announcing a shift towards new energy vehicles, which is expected to account for 80% of Harvard's new energy sales by 2025 and officially stop selling fuel vehicles in 2030. As we all know, Harvard is the most important brand of Great Wall Motor. According to the data, Great Wall sold 708700 vehicles from January to August in 2022, down 9.61% from the same period last year, of which the Harvard brand sold 400600 vehicles, down 18.13% from the same period last year, accounting for 56.55% of the total sales of Great Wall. Harvard, the mainstay of Great Wall, announced a timetable for suspending the sale of fuel vehicles, a sign of his determination.

After BYD and Great Wall Motor, Changan Motor also announced the layout of the new energy track. Zhu Huarong, chairman of Changan Automobile, said at the 2022 World New Energy Automobile Congress that China's automobile industry has initially met the basic conditions for stopping the sale of fuel vehicles and called for the suspension of the sale of fuel vehicles to be put on the agenda. It is understood that Changan Automobile announced the "Shangri-La Plan" as early as 2017 and will invest more than 100 billion yuan in the new energy sector in the next eight years, and will completely stop the sale of traditional fuel vehicles by 2025.

In addition to the above car companies, Volvo and Fiat Chrysler announced that they would no longer launch fuel vehicles as early as 2019; Lincoln completely stopped selling fuel vehicles in 2022; BAIC and Nissan plan to stop the production and sale of their own brands of traditional fuel passenger cars in China by 2025; BMW plans to stop selling fuel vehicles in the European Union by 2030; Mercedes-Benz plans to achieve full electrification by 2030 Volkswagen and Kia plan to stop production of fuel vehicles by 2035; Toyota plans to be the first to stop selling fuel vehicles in China, Europe and North America by 2030; in addition, GM, Ford, Aston Martin and Maserati have also made it clear that they will stop selling fuel vehicles in the future.

At the same time, major countries have also stepped up their cooperation, with California announcing a total ban on the sale of fuel vehicles by 2035. Prior to this, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Slovenia and India imposed a ban on the sale of fuel vehicles until 2030, while Hainan of China and Quebec of Canada announced a ban on the sale of fuel vehicles in 2035. France and Spain are scheduled to ban the sale of traditional fuel vehicles in 2040.

Once the "ban on combustion", the auto industry will face reshuffle. Zhu Huarong predicted that "in the next 3-5 years, 80% of Chinese fuel car brands will 'shut down and merge' (that is, close down, stop production, merge and transform)." As for whether the market is ready to "ban combustion" but ready? At present, the "combustion ban" is the trend of the times, but it is too early to discuss whether the infrastructure construction and the power system can carry the energy supplement needs of hundreds of millions of electric vehicles across the country. For enterprises, it takes courage to propose a "ban on combustion", and it also means abandoning the research and development of fuel vehicles and transforming the development of electric vehicles in an all-round way, which seems to be the problem of the development route of automobile technology. but in essence, it is a reform of the entire automobile industry, involving the systematic problems of vehicle manufacturing, supply chain, transportation system and infrastructure.
