AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/04 Report--

According to the latest Reuters report, GM outsold Toyota in the United States in the first three quarters. Data show that Toyota sold 1571714 vehicles in the United States in the first three quarters of 2022, down 15.8 percent from a year earlier, significantly lagging behind US giant General Motors, which sold 1650827 vehicles in the United States, surpassing Toyota to regain the top spot in US auto sales.

GM sold 2.218 million vehicles in the United States in 2021, while Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States, the first time an overseas brand has won the title in the United States, according to the data. It is understood that General Motors has been the top seller in the United States since it overtook Ford in 1931. In the 1960s, during the 20 years when the Japanese economy took off, Toyota began to export to the United States, which also coincided with the increase of immigrant population, and there was a strong demand for Japanese economical cars with low fuel economy and low failure rate. In 1984, Toyota started production in the United States through a joint venture with GM. In 1986, Toyota built its first independent factory in the southern state of Kentucky. By 2021, Toyota will start production at its joint plant in Alabama and Mazda in the southern United States, with five vehicle plants in the United States.

At the same time, struggling with chip shortages, labor shortages and supply chain bottlenecks, major US automakers are generally unable to increase production capacity to meet consumer demand for new cars. Among them, Toyota is one of the most affected carmakers, and the chip shortage and COVID-19 epidemic forced the company to cut production several times, casting a shadow over its production targets.

According to the latest data, Honda's sales in the United States reached 222050 in the third quarter of 2022, down 35.8 percent from the same period last year; Nissan sold 154086 vehicles in the United States, down 22.6 percent from the same period last year; and Toyota sold 526017 vehicles in the United States, down 7.1 percent from the same period last year.

According to the data, the top three markets of global car sales in 2021 are China, the United States and Japan, with annual sales of 21.482 million, 14.947 million and 4.448 million respectively. Take the Japanese and American markets as an example, although only some car companies have announced market sales, it is sufficient to prove that the automobile market has shrunk significantly under the influence of inflation, parts shortage, soaring oil prices and so on. As the world's largest car market, China sold 14.66 million vehicles from January to August in 2022, up 12% from a year earlier, while the United States fell 15% and Japan fell 14%. The performance of the world's major auto markets is weak.

Since the beginning of this year, inflation in the United States has remained high, soaring prices have led to a sharp rise in the cost of living, consumers have been forced to reduce consumption of durable goods such as cars, and enterprises are unable to be left alone. While GM's sales in the US have increased, some analysts have warned that as the highest level of inflation in decades and rising oil prices will hit the auto industry, consumers may not pay more for cars / trucks in the coming months, which will lead to a decline in car demand in the coming quarters.
