AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/16 Report--
New car registrations in Germany rose 14.1 per cent to 224816 in September from a year earlier, with cumulative new car registrations falling 7.4 per cent to 1867885 in the first three quarters, according to official data. It is worth mentioning that the growth rate of new energy vehicle sales in Germany is significantly higher than that of the overall market, approaching the highest level in history. According to the list, eight car companies registered more than 10,000 new cars in September. They are Volkswagen (40371), Mercedes (20065), Audi (17068), BMW (16449), Skoda (14631), Tesla (13724), Opel (11176) and Ford (11,083). Among them, Tesla is the only carmaker that sells only electric cars.
Data show that in September, German sales of various types of new energy vehicles totaled 72725, an increase of 29 percent over the same period last year, with a market share of about 32.3 percent, of which 44389 were pure electric vehicles, up 32 percent from the same period last year, with a market share of 19.7 percent. 28336 mixed models, an increase of 24% year-on-year and a market share of 12.6%.
In September, Tesla delivered a very surprising result, delivering a total of 13724 new cars in the German market, of which 9846 were sold by Model Y, leading Volkswagen Golf to become the top passenger car seller in Germany that month. At the same time, the Model 3 also sold 3878 cars, which is also ahead of traditional luxury cars such as Audi A3, Audi A6 and BMW X3.
Behind Tesla Model Y is Volkswagen Golf, which sold 7095 cars in September, while the following models also came from Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen Touguan ranked third with 5887 new car sales, while Skoda Mingrui and Volkswagen Tango ranked fourth and fifth, with 5786 and 5135 new cars respectively.
If you only consider the new energy vehicle market, Tesla's performance is also very excellent, is the only car company with more than 10,000 sales. Specifically, Tesla sold 13724 new energy vehicles in the German market, followed by Volkswagen, which sold 7148 new energy vehicles in September, including 4901 pure electric vehicles and 2247 plug-in hybrids, followed by Mercedes-Benz. A total of 7956 new energy vehicles were sold, including 2331 pure electric vehicles and 5625 plug-in hybrids. In addition, BMW sold 5033 new energy vehicles (2121 pure electricity and 2912 plug-in), Hyundai 4229 (2929 pure electricity mixed with 1300 plug-in) and Audi 4242 (2170 pure electricity mixed with 2072 plug-in).
In the electric vehicle segment, Tesla is even more unshakable. In September, Molde Y and Model 3 respectively ranked first and second place in the German pure electricity market, with the combined sales of the two more than the last eight combined.
Although the German government attaches great importance to the development of the industrialization of electric vehicles, the overall performance of electric vehicles in Germany has not met expectations. There is not a single local electric car on the top 10 best-selling list. Although there are several new cars on the list of electric cars, the advantage of domestic electric models in Germany is not obvious, Volkswagen ID. The sales volume of the series is not much different from that of Fiat and Hyundai electric cars.
In November 2019, Musk announced an investment of 5 billion euros to build a new super factory near Berlin, covering an area of 227000 square meters, which is Tesla's fourth super factory in the world. Before the Berlin plant was put into production, Tesla's sales in Europe mainly depended on imports and mainly on the export supply of Shanghai super factories. The plant was originally scheduled to start production in July 2021, but construction of the plant was suspended several times due to related problems such as environmental approval. Tesla's Berlin plant was inaugurated and officially put into production on March 22nd, but nine months later than Musk had expected. However, from the current point of view, even if Tesla's Berlin factory has been put into production, Tesla will have to rely on the Shanghai factory for supply in the short term, given that supply exceeds demand in the German market.
The reason why Tesla is able to sell well in the German market is also related to the situation in the German market. On September 1st, a three-month fuel subsidy introduced by the German government expired, causing German oil prices to rise sharply. Statistics from the German Motor Transport Association on more than 400 gas stations in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin show that the average price of diesel has far exceeded 2.10 euros per liter, and the price of some gas stations has even exceeded 2.3 euros per litre. The average price of high-quality gasoline has also exceeded 2 euros per liter.
The German Motor Transport Association said that mathematically, as the fuel subsidy expires, the price of diesel will rise by at least 17 euro cents per liter and the price of gasoline will rise by at least 35 euro cents per liter. But since most suppliers choose to buy as much fuel as possible before the subsidy expires, it may take some time for the price rise caused by the end of the subsidy to be fully realized. this also means that German oil prices will continue to rise sharply in the future.
Frondell, an expert at the Leibniz Institute of Economics, pointed out that German fuel prices are likely to continue to rise, not only because the subsidy measures expire, but also because of drought and high temperatures, the water level of rivers such as the Rhine in Germany remains low, which also leads to an increase in freight charges for inland shipping, while fuels such as diesel are very dependent on inland shipping, and it is expected that as the water level of the Rhine falls, the increase in fuel prices will be more obvious.
One of the biggest advantages of electric cars is that their daily use costs are much lower than those of fuel-powered cars, because electricity is usually much cheaper than gasoline. However, as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and European sanctions on Russian oil and gas, the cost of petrol and electricity in Europe has soared this year, and the cost advantage of using electric cars has gradually diminished.
Tesla sent an email to car owners in Europe warning them that the price of the supercharging network would rise sharply again. In an email, Tesla blamed the price rise on the rise in European "energy prices": "due to the rise in energy prices, we are adjusting charging prices across Europe." However, even so, the cost of new energy vehicles is still ordinary fuel vehicles, which may be the main reason why Tesla continues to occupy high sales in the European market.
