AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/21 Report--
According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen recalled 74067 vehicles of Volkswagen and Audi brands in the United States, including Volkswagen Atlas, Atlas crossover (domestic counterparts are Tu'on and Tu'on X) and Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback. At present, there are a large number of domestic and imported models that use the current EA888 2.0T engine in the domestic market, but the recall is only for overseas markets, and there is no relevant recall or statement for the EA888 engine in China.
The reason for the recall is that there is a safety failure in the engine, which may cause the vehicle to stall, thus increasing the risk of collision. in addition, faulty connecting rod bearings may lead to oil leakage and potential fire risk.
Volkswagen said in a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the previous two fires may have been caused by the above problems. On November 9, 2021, a Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport model with a 2.0T engine of the Volkswagen EA888 caught fire, and on August 18, 2022, a fire also occurred in the Volkswagen Atlas crossover with a 2.0T engine of the Volkswagen EA888. Then, under the investigation of the defect investigation Office of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volkswagen submitted a report to the Volkswagen and Audi Product Safety Committee on Sept. 30, which showed that Volkswagen finally decided to recall at least 74067 SUV because of the sudden loss of power and engine oil leakage that could lead to fire.
The recalled models are a total of 25414 2022 and 2023 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models produced between September 2021 and October 2022, and 48653 Audi Q5 and Audi Q5 Sportback models from 2021 to 2023.
Volkswagen said most of the failures occurred in new cars within 1600 km of vehicles, and most of the repaired vehicles had engine noises, including warning lights on the dashboard. Volkswagen expects only 2 per cent of its models to have problems.
Volkswagen stressed that Volkswagen already produces 2.0T engines of the EA888 series according to new standards. In view of the above defects, Volkswagen will carry out free maintenance for the recalled vehicles and replace the engine if necessary, and the dealers will notify the owners of the recall by email from December 6.
