The reason for the recall is that the inflator of the vehicle Takata airbag uses ammonium nitrate as a desiccant, ammonium nitrate is an oxidizer, which is very soluble in water, absorbs a lot of heat when dissolved, and is explosively decomposed by violent impact or heat, and there is a risk of explosion when the vehicle is used in frequent high temperature and humid environments, so Stellantis decided to recall the above models.

According to the report, Stellantis has received three deaths in the North American market, two of which were caused by an explosion of Takata airbags, all involving 2010 Dodge horses, and another accident is suspected to be related to the use of Takata airbags in Dodge Charger models in 2010. In addition, Reuters reported that the company also disclosed 20 reports of injuries, but did not specify the time frame.

NHTSA stressed in the announcement that even minor collisions can lead to airbag explosion and safety accidents, while older vehicles, such as 2010 cars, face higher risks because the service life of airbags is one of the contributing factors. Ann Carlson, acting director of NHTSA, said bluntly: "the Takata airbag of the recalled vehicle will become more and more dangerous if it is not repaired, because with the aging of the vehicle." The risk of explosion will also rise. "

With regard to the above defective models, Stellantis said that it had prepared the Takata airbags that needed to be replaced and called on the owners of the models involved to contact the dealer to arrange free repairs as soon as possible.

It should be noted that according to media reports, Stellantis has sent 210 million recalls since 2015, also due to problems with airbags, and this recall may mean that 276000 vehicles are still unresolved. Reuters reported that since 2009, more than 30 deaths around the world (including at least 22 in the United States) and hundreds of injuries in various automakers' vehicles have been linked to Takata airbag inflators, which may explode, releasing metal shrapnel from cars and trucks.
