The reason for the recall is that some plug-in hybrid vehicles in the scope of this recall may not be able to start the engine due to errors in the software control logic of the engine control module. If a fault occurs, a message will appear in the instrument when the vehicle is started (the drive system needs to be repaired), and the vehicle can be driven in electric mode. When the engine is required to work, the instrument will be warned again but the engine will not start. If the user ignores the warnings and prompts to continue driving, when the vehicle's high-voltage battery runs out, the instrument will prompt "safe stop" and the vehicle will lose its power drive, which is a hidden danger.

In view of the above defects, Volvo Automobile sales (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Daqing Volvo Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will upgrade the engine control module software for vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge through vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology. For vehicles that cannot be recalled through remote upgrade (OTA) technology, Volvo authorized dealers will actively contact relevant users to upgrade the software for the vehicle.

From the number of the recall, Volvo recalled a total of 6985 vehicles, including imported XC90, S60, S90 long wheelbase models and XC60.

It should be noted that on September 30, Volvo Automobile sales (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Daqing Volvo Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., in accordance with the requirements of the regulations on the recall of defective Automobile products and the measures for the implementation of the regulations on the recall of defective Automobile products, filed the recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration and decided to recall the following vehicles from September 30, 2022. A total of 4720 vehicles, including imported XC90, S60, S90 long wheelbase models and XC60.

The difference is that, according to the announcement at that time, the reason for the recall is that some plug-in hybrid vehicles within the scope of this recall have internal short circuits in the power battery module, which may lead to overheating of the battery module when the power battery is in a high-energy state. in extreme cases, it leads to power battery heat out of control, there are safety risks. In response to the recalled vehicles, Volvo said that from September 30, 2022, vehicles within the recall will be temporarily upgraded free of charge to reduce the risk of thermal runaway. At the same time, starting from May 1, 2023, all power battery modules will be replaced free of charge for vehicles within the recall to eliminate safety risks. In addition, Volvo recommends that users avoid plugging in the vehicle before downloading the software. At the same time, users should contact Volvo authorized dealers as soon as possible to carry out software upgrades. Subsequently, there were media reports that Volvo Chinese officials said that for the recalled vehicles, "free upgrade software, free replacement of power battery modules", and give each car owner a cash care subsidy of 10,000 yuan. Volvo Chinese officials stressed that apart from the above-mentioned recall batches, other batches of models will not have such problems.

From the point of view of this recall, although the number of recalls has increased, most of the problem vehicles in this recall can be upgraded through remote upgrade (OTA) technology, so that car owners do not need to open 4S stores.
