On February 10, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration issued an announcement that Mercedes-Benz and Audi, two luxury brands, launched a recall in China.

According to the announcement, Mercedes-Benz (China) Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. and Beijing Benz Automobile Co., Ltd. filed the recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products and the Measures for the Implementation of the Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products, and planned to recall the following vehicles, totaling 293 vehicles.

I. Since February 13,2023, Mercedes-Benz (China) Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. recalls some imported GLE SUV and GLS SUV vehicles with production dates from July 19,2021 to August 3,2022, totaling 70 vehicles.

The reason for the recall is that some vehicles within the scope of this recall are not tightened according to the specified torque due to the locking bolt of the steering coupling, resulting in possible clearance at the connection between the locking bolt and the steering coupling, and further loosening along with vehicle vibration. In extreme cases, locking bolts may come out of the steering coupling, affecting the handling of the vehicle and posing a risk of collision. In view of the above defects, Mercedes-Benz (China) Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. will replace the locking bolts of the steering coupling free of charge and tighten them according to the standard torque for vehicles within the scope of recall through authorized dealers to eliminate safety hazards.

II. From now on, Beijing Mercedes-Benz Automobile Co., Ltd. recalls some domestic EQE electric vehicles with production date from September 18,2022 to October 29,2022, totaling 223 vehicles.

The reason for the recall is that the software control logic setting of the high-voltage battery management system of the vehicles within the scope of this recall is unreasonable, which may cause the insulation measuring equipment (IMD) inside the high-voltage battery to close abnormally, resulting in the power-off of the high-voltage battery and the loss of power during driving of the vehicle, resulting in potential safety hazards. In view of the above defects, Beijing Benz Automobile Co., Ltd. will update the high-voltage battery management system software for vehicles within the recall scope free of charge through Mercedes-Benz authorized dealers to eliminate potential safety hazards.

On the same day, Audi also launched a recall. According to the announcement, FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. filed the recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products and the Measures for the Implementation of the Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products. Since February 20,2023, the recall of some imported Audi A6 Allroad, A6 Avant, A7, RS6, RS7, S6 and S7 vehicles with production dates from March 31,2021 to June 1,2022 has been expanded, totaling 3330 vehicles.

The reason for the recall is that some vehicles within the scope of this recall may be stuck on the vent pipe in the fuel tank due to the change of installation position of fuel delivery module and excessive geometric size tolerance of fuel level sensor, resulting in incorrect fuel level and driving mileage displayed in the combination instrument, and the vehicle may stall during driving due to fuel exhaustion, resulting in potential safety hazard. In view of the above defects, FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. will entrust Audi authorized dealers to replace optimized fuel level sensors for vehicles within the scope of recall free of charge to eliminate potential safety hazards.

It should be noted that this recall activity is an expanded recall of the recall activity of "FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. recalls some imported Audi cars" issued on July 29,2022. On July 29,2022, FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. filed the recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products and the Measures for the Implementation of the Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products, recalling the following vehicles.

I. Since August 12,2022,4842 imported Audi A8L, RS6, RS7, S6, S7 and S8 vehicles manufactured from June 15,2012 to March 23,2017 have been recalled. The reason for the recall is that due to the small mesh width of the turbocharger oil filter, the oil filter mesh may be stuck by oil/carbon deposits in the engine oil, resulting in lack of lubrication of turbocharger bearings. In extreme cases, it may cause bearing wear of turbocharger, impeller contact housing or shaft damage, instrument panel fault lamp alarm (EPC, MIL or oil alarm lamp), delayed engine start, unstable idle speed, insufficient power, etc., which may cause flameout during driving, resulting in potential safety hazard. In view of the above defects, FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. will entrust Audi authorized dealers to replace the optimized turbocharger oil filter free of charge for vehicles within the recall scope to eliminate potential safety hazards.

II. Since October 20,2022, some imported Audi A6, A6 Avant, A7, RS6, RS7, S6 and S7 vehicles with production dates from July 25,2018 to May 31,2021 will be recalled, totaling 23881 vehicles. The reason for the recall is that some vehicles within the scope of this recall may be stuck on the vent pipe in the fuel tank due to the change of installation position of fuel delivery module and excessive geometric size tolerance of fuel level sensor, resulting in incorrect fuel level and driving mileage displayed in the combination instrument, and the vehicle may stall during driving due to fuel exhaustion, resulting in potential safety hazard. In view of the above defects, FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd. will entrust Audi authorized dealers to replace optimized fuel level sensors for vehicles within the scope of recall free of charge to eliminate potential safety hazards.

According to the list of domestic passenger car recalls in 2022 according to the statistics of "Automobile Industry Concern," the number of Mercedes-Benz brand recalls in 2022 was 567545, ranking third in the list. Overall, although the number of Mercedes-Benz recalls declined compared with the previous year, the recall frequency ranked first in the list, with 21 recalls throughout the year. The Audi brand recalled 512617 vehicles in 2022, second only to the Mercedes-Benz brand, but the recall frequency was only 6 times.
