Over the past hundred years, the automobile industry has been booming, but now the fuel vehicles that span a hundred years will retire from the stage of history.

On February 14th, the European Parliament passed a 2035 European moratorium on fuel-engine vehicles in Strasbourg with 340 votes for, 279 votes against and 21 abstentions to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. In other words, no vehicle with an engine can be sold in 27 European countries, including HEV, PHEV and add-on electric cars. It is understood that the agreement on zero emissions of newly sold fuel cars and minivans in Europe in 2035 will be adopted by the Council of Europe and finally implemented.

In the face of increasingly stringent carbon regulations and global carbon neutralization targets, it may be only a matter of time before automakers stop producing fuel vehicles. Industry insiders believe that the suspension of the sale of fuel vehicles is a gradual process, and now the European Union has announced the final suspension of the sale of fuel vehicles in order to give car companies more time to prepare and transform. It should be noted that although the European Union will stop the sale of fuel vehicles in 2035, according to the time points announced by major countries, the goal of transforming fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles is expected to be achieved around 2030. The transformation of fuel vehicles and new energy vehicles occupy the market only in the last seven years.

After a hundred years of development of the automobile industry, fuel vehicles are really going to be subverted by electric cars? In recent years, a number of car companies continue to speed up the electrified transformation, one after another announced a timetable to stop the sale of fuel vehicles.

On April 3, 2022, BYD announced that it would stop production of fuel-fueled vehicles and focus on pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the future. This means that BYD has become the first traditional carmaker in the world to stop selling fuel cars. After stopping the production of fuel vehicles, BYD's sales of new energy vehicles soared, surpassing Tesla to become the top seller of new energy vehicles in the world. Data show that BYD sold 1.8574 million new energy passenger vehicles in 2022 (pure electric: 911100; plug-in hybrid: 946200), an increase of 212.82% over the same period last year, surpassing FAW-Volkswagen to become the best-selling automaker in China.

Facts have proved that new energy vehicles have become a new racetrack for cars. On June 5, 2022, Changzheng Automobile, a commercial vehicle brand owned by Great Wall Motor, announced that it would completely stop producing fuel vehicles, shifting from traditional energy to clean energy transport technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells and pure electric power. On August 22, 2022, the Harvard brand of Great Wall announced a full transition to new energy vehicles, suspending the sale of fuel vehicles from 2030. It should be noted that fuel vehicles are still responsible for the sales of the Harvard brand, and new energy vehicles account for a very small proportion, and Harford's decision to stop selling fuel vehicles from 2030 may be helpless.

On November 24, 2022, Dongfeng Vogue announced that it would achieve 100% electrification within three years, stop production of fuel cars within five years, and become a mainstream brand of new energy favored by Chinese young people in 2025.

In fact, before BYD announced the suspension of fuel cars, many car companies had already announced the timetable for ending fuel vehicles. For example, Changan Automobile, which announced the Shangri-La Plan as early as 2017, will invest more than 100 billion yuan in new energy in the next eight years, and will completely stop the sale of traditional fuel vehicles by 2025. In addition, Volvo and Fiat Chrysler announced that they would no longer launch fuel vehicles as early as 2019; Lincoln stopped completely selling fuel vehicles in 2022; BAIC and Nissan plan to stop production and sale of their own brand traditional fuel passenger cars in China by 2025; BMW plans to stop selling fuel vehicles in the European Union by 2030; Mercedes-Benz plans to achieve full electrification by 2030; Volkswagen and Kia plan to stop production of fuel vehicles by 2035 Toyota plans to take the lead in halting the sale of fuel vehicles in China, Europe and North America in 2030; in addition, GM, Ford, Aston Martin and Maserati have also made it clear that they will stop selling fuel vehicles in the future.

Although the time for major car companies to stop selling fuel vehicles is different, a consensus has basically been reached. This means that in three or five years' time, the range of fuel car brands and models that consumers can choose will be further narrowed, and the entire auto industry and auto market will accelerate to embrace the era of electrification. Of course, this is not only the trend of the times, but also a helpless move. Driven by the goal of mitigating global warming and the policy of banning the sale of fuel vehicles in major countries, different car companies and brands have no choice but to kill fuel vehicles. The life of fuel vehicles has entered the countdown stage.

It should be noted that the suspension of the sale of fuel vehicles does not mean that the fuel vehicles have disappeared. The fuel vehicle industry is a complete industrial chain, including power technology, energy and industry supporting facilities. Even if the major car companies announce a timetable for suspending the sale of fuel vehicles, it can only be said that the fuel vehicle industry is shrinking. As to whether electric vehicles can completely replace traditional fuel vehicles, it also needs to be another matter.
