AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)03/23 Report--
On March 23, Chevrolet issued a message confirming that the Comero will officially stop production in January 2024 and announced that there are no follow-up model plans for the time being. However, according to Chevrolet's plan, the name of the "Camaro" will be retained, while Chevrolet will release a rare version of the Comero within 2023.
The Chevrolet Comero, which has evolved for six generations, is one of the representative models of American sports cars, but its poor sales performance in recent years makes it the biggest decline in Chevrolet's model and can no longer compete with Ford's Mustang. In fact, as early as 2021, GM said in a media conversation that the Comero would stop production at the end of 2023, instead of producing the Comero sports car and the Comero electric car in the same way as Ford, which will be replaced by a brand new electric four-door sedan in the future.
The first generation of Comero was born in 1966, based on the GM F-Body rear-drive platform. It is GM's first product that uses independent subframes to support the engine and uses computers to train the suspension system for the first time. In 1970, the second generation Comero was born, which was built on the same platform as the first generation, but cancelled the convertible version, which is the only generation of Comero without the convertible version. In addition, Comero's horsepower gradually diminished with the introduction of stricter emission restrictions and the emergence of the energy crisis.
In 1982, the third-generation Comero was released to restore the use of high-displacement engines, of which the 5.7L V8 engine was carried in 1987. In the same year, the convertible version of Comero also returned. Launched in 1993, the fourth-generation Comero, based on the improved F-body platform, maintains the basic elements that have continued from the first generation to the present: two-door, four-seat design, convertible or hardtop, rear wheel drive, and innovative use of fiberglass and polyester resin for roof, trunk, door and spoiler.
In 2001, Comero finally stopped production because of low sales. In 2006, the fifth generation Comero concept car was officially released, based on GM's full-size rear-drive platform-Zeta platform, more Chinese consumers also began to understand this generation of models, and gained the popularity of a large number of users with the new platform and design. In 2010, Comero sold 81299 vehicles a year, ending Ford's 23-year record for Mustang sales in the American sports car market.
In 2015, Chevrolet launched its sixth-generation Comero model overseas, and the car officially entered the domestic market. The sixth generation Comero has three engines to choose from, from 2.0T turbocharged to 6.2L mechanically supercharged V8 LT4. However, no upgrade has been made since the release of the sixth-generation Comero, and sales of the car have been falling since 2016, unable to compete with Ford's Muatang. At the same time, GM has made a full transition to electrification, and it is to be expected that Comero, which has long been marginalized, has stopped production.
To commemorate this classic sports car, Chevrolet will launch a rare version of the Comero this year. According to the preview diagram, the rare version of the model will be equipped with a large spoiler and a heat dissipation opening on the cabin cover. According to foreign media speculation, the collection version of the model will be equipped with 6.2L V8 engine, the maximum output power of more than 1000 horsepower.
There have been reports that GM may split Camaro and Escalade into sub-brands of Chevrolet and Cadillac, although no matter what form Camaro returns in the future, it will use hybrid or pure electric power.
