AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)03/24 Report--

On March 23, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 570000 defective vehicles because of the risk of fire in their traction harness modules.

The recall involved 567912 Hyundai cars and 3555 Kia vehicles, including the 2019-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe, the 2021-2023 Santa Fe HEV, the 2022-2023 Santa Fe plug-in hybrid and Santa Cruz pickup trucks, and the Kia Kia Jiahua MPV 2022-2023.

In response to the above defects, Hyundai carmaker said: "stagnant water on the printed circuit board (PCB) of the trailer hook harness module may cause an electrical short circuit and cause a fire." As of the date of submission of the report, Hyundai had identified six incidents that might be related to the problem, one of which led to spontaneous combustion. Considering that a fire while parking or driving increases the risk of injury, Hyundai and Kia advise car owners affected by these factors to park their vehicles outside the building until they take the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer will inspect the traction coupling module free of charge and remove the fuse if necessary to determine that final maintenance can be carried out, and the dealer will install a new fuse and wire extension kit for the vehicle.

In addition, Kia also said in a statement that Kia has not received any reports of a fire, but considering that water in contact with the tractor hook harness module of the recalled vehicle may cause an electrical short circuit on its circuit board, so the recall will be carried out as a precaution. Kia said that from May, car owners will receive a recall notice, owners only need to take the model to the dealer for inspection and maintenance.

It should be noted that this is not the first time Hyundai and Kia have conducted a recall because of this issue. Hyundai and Kia recalled 484577 vehicles in February 2022 because of ABS module failures that could lead to fires in Kia Sportage, Kia K900 and Hyundai Santa Fe in certain years. In March 2022, Hyundai was also sued for two wire harness failures in its trailer. In August 2022, Hyundai recalled Parisdi SUV (Palisade) for similar problems.
