BMW said in an official statement that owners with the above problems are advised to suspend the use of their vehicles and that owners can visit BMW's recall website or call or contact BMW's service center for help. To check whether their vehicles are eligible for free maintenance.

Prior to this, car companies, including Honda and Ford, issued similar recalls, requiring the recall of airbag models made by Takata because they could cause an explosion if they were exposed to high temperature and humidity for a long time.

Takata used to be the second largest supplier of auto safety parts in the world, and its business is involved in almost all the mainstream auto brands in the world. including the Japanese camp of Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors and many other well-known car companies, such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, Ford and so on. Later, due to problems in the production of airbags, the global automotive industry fell into a recall whirlpool, has launched a large-scale recall, the loss of billions of dollars, Takata also went bankrupt.

The Takata airbag incident has a long history, which originated in 2009, when a traffic accident in the United States revealed that the driver was killed by metal fragments ejected from the airbag, but the problem did not attract widespread attention at that time. It was only after a total of 28 airbag fragments were killed in 2014 that the United States set up a special investigation department to expose the company's behavior. The following year, the Takata airbag incident broke out in an all-round way, and many car companies around the world carried out investigations and took recall measures for models using Takata airbags. Japanese car companies were the hardest hit, and Honda was the one with the highest number of recalls. According to statistics, as of October 2014, Honda recalled nearly 5.1 million vehicles, Toyota recalled 877000 vehicles, Nissan recalled 695000 vehicles, and BMW recalled nearly 628000 vehicles. Chrysler recalled more than 371,000 vehicles, and the incident also triggered the largest recall in US history, affecting about 34 car brands, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The defect killed at least 25 people and injured more than 400 in the United States.

Hit by the Takata airbag incident, Takata agreed to pay $1 billion in compensation in 2017, of which $850 million was used to compensate carmakers. In the same year, Takata filed for bankruptcy, and then Junsheng Electronics acquired it. On April 12, 2018, its subsidiary Gusheng Security Systems (JSS) successfully settled its assets in Takata, Japan, at a price of US $1.588 billion.

On February 28, 2018, the Australian government forced automakers and dealers to recall a total of 2.3 million vehicles equipped with defective airbags made by Japan's Takata, the largest vehicle recall in Australia to date. However, although the global automobile industry has launched a number of large-scale recalls, this incident has not been completely calmed down, until today, the safety of airbags still affects some car companies.
