Proton, Malaysia's largest carmaker, previously owned by the DRB-HICOM Group, was founded under the leadership of the current Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, and acquired British Lutes in 1996, giving the company a fully independent R & D and production capacity. On June 23rd Geely Holdings and Malaysia's DRB-hicom signed an agreement to acquire 49.9 per cent of its PROTON and 51 per cent of luxury sports car brand Lotus.

Pakistan, as the sixth largest economy in South Asia, the landing of the Proton project has important strategic significance in the global layout. The first batch of Proton cars to be produced in Pakistan will be on the market by the end of 2020, which will create nearly 20,000 jobs. This explosive landing in Pakistan not only accelerates the process of internationalization of Proton, but also deepens cooperation among China, Pakistan and Malaysia in the automotive industry chain, promotes the coordinated development of the supply chain of the three countries, and sets an excellent example for the development of Belt and Road Initiative.
