On May 24, the new generation of BMW 5-Series (axis code G60, long axis version code G68) made its global debut. The unveiled model is the eighth generation of the BMW 5-Series. As a replacement, the new car is renovated inside and outside, providing fuel version and plug-in hybrid models, and the pure electric version of the BMW i5 (G60 BEV) is launched for the first time. According to the plan, new cars will be launched worldwide in October this year. In terms of appearance, the appearance of the new car fuel version and the pure electric version is basically the same, the main difference lies in the double kidney grille material and the opening and closing choice is different. Specifically, the appearance of the new car continues the design style of sports aesthetics, but the whole is stronger than the current model. The front face uses a circular bright grille with a whirldart daytime driving light, and the new style daytime driving lights are arranged vertically. The four raised lines on the front engine hatch make the front look more sporty. The eDrive i5 is available in both the eDrive 40 and M60 xDrive, in which the eDrive 40's chrome grille is more similar to the fuel car, while the M60 xDrive uses a closed double-kidney grille and blackens, and a blue element is added inside the new headlamp group to highlight its identity as an electric car.

On the side of the body, the new car still maintains the simple design style of the model on sale, the roof antenna is more flat, the door handle is semi-hidden and adopts embedded design, and the iconic "Huo corner" of the rear door is integrated with the C-pillar. In terms of size, the length, width and height of the new BMW 5 series standard shaft version are 5060/1900/1515mm, and the wheelbase is 2995mm. For comparison, the imported BMW 5 series standard wheelbase version is 4963/1868/1479mm in length, width and height, with a wheelbase of 2975mm; in contrast, the size of the new car is fully upgraded, with an increase in length, width and height, respectively, 97/32/36mm, and a longer wheelbase 20mm. Extended wheelbase domestic version of BMW 5 series length, width and height are 5087/1868/1500mm, wheelbase is 3108mm, whether the future domestic version of the model will continue to be lengthened is not clear.

In the rear part, the design of the new car is more concise, the taillight adopts horizontal line layout and the cover is redesigned, and the inner center of the taillight is divided by chrome trim, the visual effect is more delicate and delicate. The BMW i5 version adds the black encirclement of the rear diffuser style to further enhance the sporty atmosphere of the whole vehicle. On the exhaust, it is expected that the new car will adopt a bilateral single-exit layout, while the pure electric version will also eliminate the exhaust layout on both sides.

In the interior part, the new car also adopts the latest family style, equipped with 12.3in dashboard + 14.9in central control screen curved surface design, matches the iDrive8.5 system, optimizes and reduces physical buttons, and the touch air conditioning buttons and flat-bottomed steering wheel design make the car more technological.

In the power section, the new car continues to offer fuel version and plug-in hybrid version, in which the fuel version will be equipped with 2.0T turbocharged engine (255hp) and twin turbocharged 3.0T six-cylinder engine (375hp), covering 520i, 530i, 530i xDrive and 540i xDrive models, as well as 520d and 520d xDrive diesel models. The plug-in hybrid version 530e and 550e xDrive will be launched in the spring of 2024, while the domestic version is expected to continue to provide 525Li and 530Li power specifications, corresponding to the standard power and high power of 2.0T four cylinders. The pure electric version of the BMW i5 offers both eDrive 40 and M60 xDrive. The entry-level model is equipped with a rear motor with a maximum power of 340hp and a peak torque of 430Nm. The M60 version is equipped with a stronger dual motor, which is shared with the iX M60 with a maximum power of 601hp and a peak torque of 820Nm. It is expected that the future domestic models may be eDrive40L and xDrive40L.

The BMW 5-Series was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1972 and has now reached the seventh generation of models, with a total production of more than 10 million vehicles worldwide so far. The fourth-generation BMW 5-Series (E39) was released in 1995. In 2003, the fifth-generation BMW 5-Series (E60) was released, in which the BMW M5 is equipped with a 5.0L V10 naturally aspirated engine (S85B50A), with a maximum power of 507hp (373kW) / 7750rpm and a maximum torque of 520N ·m / 6100rpm, matched with a seven-speed SMG gearbox. It is also from this generation of cars that the BMW 5-Series began to be localized.

In the Chinese market, the domestic BMW 5-Series model is a medium and large car owned by BMW brilliance, and it is also one of the main sales products of BMW brilliance. Data show that the BMW Group delivered a total of 791985 new cars in the Chinese market in 2022, of which the BMW 5-Series sold a total of 171100 vehicles, making it the best performing model among the BBA products. According to the latest retail data of the Federation, from January to April 2023, the cumulative sales of the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6L were 41500, 46600 and 51100 respectively.
