Retail sales in the domestic narrow passenger car market were 1.742 million in May 2023, up 28.6 per cent from the same period last year and 7.3 per cent month-on-month, according to retail data from the Federation of passengers. Among the subdivided models, car sales in May were 851000, up 21.2 per cent from a year earlier and 9.2 per cent month-on-month, accounting for 48.85 per cent of all passenger car sales. Among them, according to the May sales list of medium-sized cars counted by Automotive Industry concern, there were more than 10,000 models sold in May, namely Camry, Passat, BMW 3-Series, Maiteng, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Accord, Model 3 and Audi A4L.

Compared with April, there was a significant reshuffle of the top 10 models on the list in May. One of the more obvious changes is the Accord model, retail sales data show that Accord sales fell to 11783 from 25590 in April, down 53.95% from the previous month, and the ranking also fell from first in April to fifth. As for the reasons for the decline in sales, Auto Industry concern believes that it may have something to do with the replacement of Accord.

On May 20, Guangzhou Automobile Honda's new-generation Accord officially launched a total of seven models with fuel version and plug-in version, with a price range of 179800-258800 yuan. As a new generation model, the new car has undergone comprehensive changes in appearance, size and interior. the power is equipped with fuel version and plug-in hybrid version, in which the 1.5T turbocharged engine model L15CH/L15CJ has a maximum power of 141kW and a peak torque of 260Nm. The transmission system matches the CVT continuously variable transmission. In addition, the gas-electric hybrid model will be equipped with a hybrid system composed of 2.0L naturally aspirated engine and motor, with a maximum power of 109kW and a peak power of 135kW, matched with an E-CVT gearbox.

In May, the Camry topped the list with sales of 19762 vehicles, up 8.62% from April. The new Camry is scheduled to go public in early 2024. In addition, Teana, which is also one of the top three in Japan, sold 5435 vehicles, falling out of the top 10 again, down 19.36 per cent from 6740 in April. With the reform of the car market, the status of Accord, Camry and Teana as the "top three of Japan" has been reshuffled. For the whole year of 2022, the sales of Camry, Accord and Teana were 242225, 220771 and 146012 respectively, ranking first and second and sixth in 2022, respectively.

In addition to the Camry's sales growth, FAW-Volkswagen Maiteng and SAIC-Volkswagen Passat, which are sister models, also showed significant growth on a month-on-month basis, especially Maiteng, which ranked second and fourth respectively in the list. Of these, Passat sold 16556 vehicles in May, up 11.37% from 14866 in April, while Maiteng sold 13980 vehicles, up 21.28% from the previous month.

In the BBA luxury brand camp, BMW has always outperformed Mercedes-Benz and Audi in terms of market sales. In the segment of medium-sized cars, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4L all sold more than 10,000 vehicles, of which BMW 3-Series sold 14009 vehicles, ahead of Mercedes-Benz C-Class 11929 and Audi A4L 11246.

Tesla also sold more than 10,000 Model 3 vehicles on the list, but fell 13.20% to 11454 from 13196 in April. In early May, Tesla China announced that the price of all its Model 3 and Model Y models would rise by 2000 yuan. After the price increase, Model 3 starts at 231900 yuan and Model Y starts at 263900 yuan.

Cadillac CT5 and BYD Seal also made the top 10 in May, with sales of 9112 and 8062, respectively. In terms of vehicle brands, Seal is the only own-brand model on the list of Top10. In addition to the above-mentioned models, Red Flag H5 and Changan Deep Blue SL03 ranked 12th and 14th respectively, and sales were good in May.

At present, Mondeo, Red Flag H5, LaCrosse and Accord and other medium-sized cars have been upgraded, the follow-up Camry, Sonata and Ershi will also soon launch replacement models, at the same time, more and more domestic car companies have also begun to launch medium-sized electric vehicles, in this context, the competition in the medium-sized car market will be more fierce.
