AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)04/29 Report--
The German car company emission gate incident is still simmering after several years of evolution, in which BMW has earlier admitted that diesel engines have installed cheating software for emission testing in an attempt to manipulate actual emission data. Recently, BMW has been sued and fined tens of billions of dollars in South Korea for emissions.
A local court upheld the 14.5 billion won (about 840 million yuan) fine imposed on BMW in a recent second-instance verdict on BMW's emissions case in South Korea, South Korean media reported.
The court made it clear that BMW South Korea had forged the entire test report and must be severely punished in order to avoid the recurrence of similar incidents.
In the whole case, BMW not only had to pay 14.5 billion won, but three executives in charge of emission certification at BMW South Korea were also sentenced to 8-10 months in prison.
The court said that despite differences in emissions certification rules between South Korea and Germany, BMW Korea's forgery of emission documents not only affected South Korea's air environment, but also betrayed the trust of consumers and should be punished.
BMW's reputation in South Korea has been greatly affected in recent years, not only the falsification of emissions documents, but also frequent fires. It is reported that BMW eventually recalled 102000 diesel vehicles in 2018 after nearly 50 vehicle fires occurred in South Korea, driven by the South Korean government, because of defective exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) modules. BMW South Korea has been criticized by the government and people from all walks of life for its procrastination in dealing with the incident and even its intention to hide the problem. At the end of 2018, more than 3300 car owners collectively sued BMW South Korea because BMW was suspected of passing the buck and negative claims in its handling of the incident.
