AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)07/23 Report--
Auto Industry concern statistics are based on a recall issued by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration during the first half of 2023. Statistics show that in the first half of 2023, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration issued a total of 68 vehicle recalls, involving 29 car brands, with a total of 2.4744 million passenger vehicles recalled, but the number of recalls showed a decreasing trend compared with the same period last year, down 2.76% from the same period last year. the scale of the recall reached the lowest level since 2015.
Judging from the above recall list, the top five car companies all recalled more than 100000 vehicles, of which the Tesla brand beat all brands to the top of the domestic recall list in the first half of 2023.
In the first half of 2023, Tesla recalled twice on March 24 and May 12 respectively, recalling a total of 1.1072 million vehicles, including imported Model S, Model X and Model3. Domestic Model3, Model Y, among which, since May 29th, 2023, Tesla Automobile (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled some imported Model S, Model X, Model3 and domestic Model3, Model Y cars from January 12, 2019 to April 24, 2023, a total of 1104622 vehicles. The reason for the recall is that the vehicles within the scope of the recall do not allow the driver to choose the energy recovery braking strategy; at the same time, it may not provide enough reminders for the driver to step on the acceleration pedal for a long time. The superposition of the above factors may increase the probability of mistakenly stepping on the acceleration pedal for a long time, may increase the risk of collision, and there are hidden dangers.
In terms of the number of recalls, although Tesla conducted only two recalls in the first half of this year, there were quite a large number of recalls, involving 1.1072 million vehicles, accounting for 44.75% of the total. In addition, the number of Tesla recalls in the first half of the year has exceeded the total number of recalls for the whole of last year (791500 vehicles). However, different from other car companies, the vehicles recalled by Tesla can be upgraded by remote upgrade (OTA) technology for the recalled vehicles, and users can complete the recall without going to the store.
In addition to Tesla, four car companies, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda and BAIC Saab, also recalled more than 100000 vehicles in the first half of the year. The German brand Mercedes-Benz ranked second on the list, recalling a total of 327100 vehicles. Although Mercedes-Benz is not the brand with the highest number of recalls, the recall frequency of Mercedes-Benz has remained high since 2023. A total of 8 recalls were filed with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration on February 10, February 23, March 24, April 14, April 26, May 10, May 26 and June 30 respectively. The recalled models include domestic EQE, C class, E class and GLC SUV. Import Class C, CLA, CLK, CLS, E, S, G, ML, GLE, GLS, etc., most of which are imported cars.
BMW, which is also a German brand, also recalled 266500 vehicles in the first half of the year, involving domestic i3, iX3, 3 series, 5 series and imported 4 series, X4, 7 series, i4, i7, iX and so on. BMW may recall 171800 domestic 5 series due to vehicle software problems on January 17th.
The Honda brand launched only one recall in the first half of the year, but the number of recalls exceeded 255500. On April 7, Guangzhou Automobile Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 224476 gasoline version Accord cars produced between October 9, 2020 and December 6, 2022, and Dongfeng Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 31020 gasoline version INSPIRE series cars produced between January 6, 2021 and November 24, 2022. The reason for the recall is that the vehicle within the scope of the recall did not record the data used to detect whether the driver pressed the brake pedal due to the setting of the vehicle incident data recording system (EDR), resulting in an incomplete EDR record report.
It should be noted that the number of Accord models recalled in the first half of the year is close to its total sales in 2022. As a reference, new car traffic insurance data show that Honda Accord's total annual sales in 2022 was 223200, ranking second in the domestic medium-sized car list, second only to the Camry (250800).
As for BAIC Saab, due to the harsh use environment, the drain hole of the front windshield rain trough may be blocked by foreign bodies, resulting in water entering the crew cabin, which in extreme cases causes the internal corrosion of the airbag controller and the airbag can not work properly. 107511 Saab D50s were recalled because of safety risks.
In addition to the top five automakers on the list, brands including Suzuki, Chevrolet, Porsche, Lexus, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Chery and Toyota also recalled 10,000 vehicles in the first half of the year. Among them, in the field of luxury brands, Porsche and Lexus also carried out three and two recalls, of which Porsche recalled a total of 51100 vehicles and Lexus recalled 48700 vehicles.
According to the country, in the first half of 2023, a total of 6 American brands launched recalls, with a total of 1.2 million passenger cars recalled, accounting for 48.50% of the total, with the largest number of recalls, of which Tesla had the highest number of recalls. A total of 5 German brands recalled 668500 vehicles, accounting for 27.02%. Although the proportion of recalls was not the highest, the recall frequency was the highest. A total of 18 recalls were launched in the first half of the year, which were the brands with the highest recall frequency among all countries. Japanese brands, a total of 6 brands recalled 399300 passenger vehicles in the first half of the year, accounting for 16.14% Korean brands also had three recalls, with a cumulative recall of 61700 vehicles, accounting for 2.49 per cent, while UK, Swedish and Italian brands recalled no more than 10,000 vehicles, accounting for less than 1 per cent.
As for China's own brands, three brands recalled 125100 vehicles in the first half of the year, accounting for 5.06 per cent. Among them, Xilai recalled 997 cars on January 6, ET5; Beijing Motor Co., Ltd. recalled 107511 Saab D50s on January 17, and Chery recalled 16640 Qirui Tiger 8 PRO on May 12.
Finally, from the perspective of recall models, as new energy vehicles have gradually become the mainstream models in the car market, the number of recalls is also increasing. In the first half of the year, mainstream new energy vehicle brands, including Tesla and Xilai, were on the list. In addition, some pure electric models were recalled, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, Volvo, Genisse and other brands. The industry believes that with the improvement of penetration, the recall of new energy vehicles will become the new normal.
"Automotive Industry concern" believes that when vehicles have hidden safety risks, car companies take the initiative to recall, to some extent, it reflects the responsible attitude of car companies, but at the same time, frequent recalls will not only make car owners question brand products, but also affect the brand image and reputation of car companies in the market.
