Ottawa-based Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. will produce the Lexus NX luxury SUV in Canada in 2022. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said the decision proves the country's important position in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Trudeau, who ran for re-election last October, said Toyota, one of the world's largest automakers, would guarantee an additional 8000 jobs in Ontario.

Sources say Toyota will produce the compact SUV and RX three-row versions of the NX in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada in 2022, while the NX has been made in Japan. The plant works with the Woodstock plant in the province to produce fuel-fueled RAV4 models and hybrid RAV4 models, but plans are about to change. The RAV4 has always topped the list of U. S. sales, followed by the Camry, while the RX has dominated Lexus sales. The NX accounted for the second-best-selling Lexus in the United States last year.

Flavio Volp, president of the Toronto-based auto parts manufacturers association, which is based in Ontario, said the news was a boost to the Canadian auto industry. Chrysler had already cut 1500 jobs at the local Windsor final assembly plant in March, while General Motors announced that it would close its plant in Oshawar by the end of 2019.
