Retail sales in the domestic narrow-sense passenger car market in August were 1.923 million, with a cumulative sales of 13.215 million this year, according to retail data from the Federation of passengers. Among them, sales of new energy passenger vehicles were 716000, up 34.5% from the same period last year and 11.8% from the previous year. The cumulative sales for the year were 4.441 million, up 36% from the same period last year.

Judging from the sales list of new energy manufacturers in August, the top 10 car companies in the list are BYD Automobile, Tesla China, GAC Ean, Geely Motor, Changan Automobile, SAIC GM Wuling, ideal Automobile, Great Wall Automobile, Lulai Automobile, and Zero Motor.

Compared with July, there are no new faces in the August list, but there has been a significant change in the ranking of car companies. The top three on the list are "BAT" and "industries specifically referring to BYD (B), Eian (A) and Tesla (T)". Among them, Tesla China soared to second place from 7th in July. In addition, the ideal car ranking fell to seventh place from sixth in July, but rose 663.8 per cent to 34914 in August from a year earlier, making it the highest year-on-year increase on the list. SAIC GM Wuling fell 2.7% in August from a year earlier, making it the only car company on the list that showed a year-on-year decline.

Data show that Tesla sold 64694 vehicles in China in August 2023, up 87.5% from the same period last year and 105.9% month-on-month. Among the subdivided models, there were 51117 Model Y and 13577 Model 3 in August. The reason for the sharp month-on-month increase is related to Tesla's overseas sales. Tesla's first month of each quarter is the export month, while new cars are mainly delivered to the domestic market in the rest of the month.

SAIC GM Wuling sold 35196 vehicles in August, down 2.7% from a year earlier, making it the only car company on the list to show a year-on-year decline. Extending the time to the previous August also showed a decline of 13.2 per cent to 247115 vehicles, with a market share of 5.6 per cent. In March this year, SAIC GM Wuling launched Wuling colorful fruit, which became a popular style as soon as it was put on the market. The data show that Wuling colorful fruit has sold 72932 vehicles since its launch, of which 13892 were sold in August, making it another popular model after Hongguang MINIEV (15844 in August). However, Wuling fruit alone did not bring growth to SAIC GM Wuling's overall sales.

Judging from the entire list, BYD is firmly at the top of the list, both in terms of monthly list and cumulative sales in the previous eight months. According to the data, BYD's sales rose 43.1 per cent year-on-year to 241592 vehicles in August and 69.2 per cent to 1627047 vehicles from January to August, with a market share of 36.6 per cent. However, according to BYD's annual sales target of 3 million, BYD's completion rate was only 54.23% by the end of August, which has not yet reached 60%. It is still difficult for BYD to complete the remaining nearly 40% of its sales in the remaining four months.

The third person on the list is GAC Ean, with sales of 52057 vehicles, up 92.7% from the same period last year, with sales exceeding 40, 000 for six consecutive months. By the end of August, GAC Ean had sold a total of 306418 vehicles this year, an increase of 97.8% over the same period last year, and had achieved the annual sales target of 500000 vehicles by 61.28%. At present, GAC Ean's sales mainly come from AION S and AION Y models. Haopin GT, the first production car of Egan's new energy brand, has been launched in July. The car has launched a total of five models with a price range of 21.99-339900 yuan. It is expected that the new car may further boost Ean sales.

In the "Wei Xiaoli" camp, Xiaopeng Automobile is the only car company to fail the list. Data show that Xiaopeng delivered a total of 13690 cars in August, which is its two consecutive months of delivery of more than 10,000 vehicles, but there is still a clear gap compared with the ideal and the ideal, especially compared with the ideal. In August, ideal delivered a total of 34914 new cars, an increase of 663.82% over the same period last year. In the first eight months of this year, it delivered a total of 208165 new cars, an increase of 176.10% over the same period last year. Whether monthly sales or annual sales, the growth rate of ideal cars is higher than that of other car companies. It should be noted that, driven by continued booming sales, the performance of ideal cars also improved significantly in the first half of the year. Data show that from 2020 to 2022, the net losses of ideal cars were 792 million yuan, 321 million yuan and 2.012 billion yuan respectively, while the net profit in the first half of this year was 3.223 billion yuan, filling in the cumulative losses of the previous three years.

A total of 19329 vehicles were delivered in August, an increase of 81.0% over the same period last year, but slightly down 5.5% from July. A total of 94352 vehicles were delivered this year, an increase of 31.9% over the same period last year.

In addition to "Wei Xiaoli", the new force of second-line carmaking ranked 10th on the list with 14190 deliveries in August, but only 73027 cars were delivered in the previous August, down 4.62% from the same period last year and falling out of the top 10 of the list. Nezha also delivered more than 10,000 vehicles in August, but fell 24.44 per cent year-on-year to 12103, and cumulative sales for the year fell 15.5 per cent to 77589.

In addition to the above-mentioned car companies, Geely and Changan ranked fourth and fifth on the list, with sales of 46144 and 38355 respectively in August, up 29.7 per cent and 168.8 per cent respectively from a year earlier. In addition, Great Wall also grew, rising 103.6 per cent to 23319 in August from a year earlier.

Overall, in August, a number of new energy car companies have varying degrees of growth. Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the Federation, said that in August, the car market showed a "super" trend, higher than the association's expectations, not only "not light in the off-season", but "hot in the off-season". In the past, "Golden Nine and Silver 10" was the peak season for car sales, but since August, many car companies have reduced the price of their models to attract more consumers to buy cars, which is expected to further boost sales in the car market.
