As of press time, Toyota officials have not responded to the above news.

On September 28, Toyota Motor Group released the global production and sales data report for August 2023. According to the data, in August 2023, Toyota's global cumulative sales volume was 853,300 vehicles, with a year-on-year growth of 9.81%; the cumulative production was 798,800 vehicles, with a year-on-year growth of 4.19%, all hitting a new high for the same period.

For the growth of production and sales data, Toyota said it was mainly due to the recovery of supply chain and the recovery of market demand.

Specifically, in terms of production, Toyota produced 238,700 vehicles in its home market in August this year, up 21.77% year-on-year, while 560,100 vehicles were produced in overseas markets, down 1.86% year-on-year. In terms of sales volume, Toyota sold 120,400 vehicles in Japan in August this year, up 45.49% year-on-year; overseas sales volume was 732,900 vehicles, up 5.57% year-on-year. By region, Toyota (including Lexus brand) sold 175,800 vehicles in China in August, down 6.6% year-on-year. Toyota officials said the year-on-year decline in sales in China was due to a rebound in purchase tax relief measures implemented in the same month last year and increased competition.

In terms of sales of electric vehicles, Toyota (including Lexus brand) sold 301,800 electric vehicles (including hybrids) in August, up 48.9% year-on-year; sales of electric vehicles (including hybrids) in China were 67,800, up 27% year-on-year. But compared with Volkswagen, Toyota's layout in pure electric vehicles is very slow.

Up to now, Toyota has arranged two pure electric vehicles in the Chinese market, namely bZ4X and bZ3. Among them, bZ4X was launched in October last year. It is Toyota's first model based on e-TNGA architecture. It is positioned as a medium-sized pure electric SUV and undertakes the heavy responsibility of Toyota's transformation to electric. It is jointly produced and sold by GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota. bZ3 is Toyota's second bZ series model, officially launched on April 16, the new car launched a total of 3 models, selling price range of 169,800 - 199,800 yuan, and bZ4X model is different, this car is only produced and sold by FAW Toyota, GAC Toyota does not participate in production.

However, Toyota's presence in the electric vehicle market is not high. According to the retail data of the association, from January to August 2023, the cumulative sales volume of GAC Toyota bZ4X was 5380; the cumulative sales volume of FAW Toyota bZ4X was 6660, and that of FAW Toyota bZ3 was 14651.

With the gradual shrinking of the market share of fuel vehicles, Japanese automobile enterprises that used to rely on fuel vehicles to seize a certain market share in the domestic market have shown obvious decline. Japanese brand retail sales fell to 16.7% in August, down 4% year-on-year, according to the association. Subdivided into Japanese joint venture brands, GAC Toyota ranked sixth in the list of domestic manufacturers, down 5.2% year-on-year to 80,000 vehicles, FAW Toyota fell 6.8% year-on-year to 76,000 vehicles. Including Guangzhou Automobile Honda, Dongfeng Honda and Dongfeng Nissan, they all fell out of the top ten on the list. Dongfeng Nissan sold 62,000 vehicles in August, down 29.69 percent year-on-year, according to official data, while Honda no longer announced sales of joint-venture brands.

Toyota has previously said that China is one of Toyota's most important markets, and Toyota plans to launch two pure electric vehicles developed in China in 2024. According to the latest news from Nikkei News on September 23, Toyota plans to triple the production of electric vehicles by 2025 compared with its target of 190,000 electric vehicles in 2024. Toyota has informed major component suppliers that it plans to increase production of Toyota and Lexus-branded electric vehicles to 600,000 units by 2025.
