Retail sales in the domestic narrow passenger car market were 1.095 million in February, down 21.0 per cent from a year earlier and 46.2 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Of this total, car sales were 498000, down 23.9 per cent from the same period last year and 45 per cent from the previous month.

According to the February top10 list of medium-sized sedan sales counted by Automotive Industry concern, only three models sold more than 10,000 vehicles in February, namely Passat, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Maiteng.

Compared with January, the ranking of the top 10 models in February has changed dramatically. For comparison, the top 10 models on the January midsize car list are Passat, Maiteng, Camry, Accord, Red Flag H5, BMW 3-Series, Regal, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Wuling Xingguang PHEV and Model 3, of which the first nine models sold more than 10,000 vehicles.

In February, only three models sold more than 10,000 vehicles. Specifically, Passat sold 11641 vehicles, its second consecutive month at the top of the list, compared with 22313 in January and 33954 in the first two months of this year as of the end of February. In third place is FAW-Volkswagen Maiteng, which sold 10217 vehicles in February, compared with 16593 in January, ranking second on the list, with cumulative sales of 26810 from January to February.

Maiteng and Passat are sister models to each other, and the two cars once had a good market position in medium-sized cars. Among them, Passat won the B-Class sales in 2016 and 2019, while Maiteng won the B-Class sales in 2017 and 2018, with annual sales of more than 200000 vehicles respectively. Passat and Maiteng's market position has also been shaken to a certain extent with the rise of independent brands. In terms of sales in the first two months of this year, the performance of the two cars is not particularly eye-catching, but it is not bad.

Camry, by contrast, has consistently topped the list of midsize cars, with sales of 6971 in February, falling out of the top five of the top10 list, with 15456 in January. As for the reasons for the decline in sales, Auto Industry concern believes that it is mainly related to the replacement of the Camry.

The 9th generation Camry of Guangzhou Auto Toyota officially launched on March 6, with a total of nine models, including four 2.0L gasoline models and five 2.0L smart electric hybrid dual-engine models, of which the gasoline version sells for 17.18-196800 yuan and the intelligent hybrid dual-engine version sells for 17.98-206800 yuan. It is worth mentioning that, according to the plan, Passat and Maiteng will also be replaced this year, among which, the declaration chart of the new generation Maiteng model has appeared in the declaration catalogue, the appearance and interior of the new car has been adjusted, and the power is equipped with a 2.0T engine. Maiteng is expected to be on the market faster than Passat.

Back on the list, Accord, which is also one of the top three of the Japanese system, sold 6519 vehicles in February and 21975 in January-February, while Teana has fallen off the list of top10 with sales of 4764 and 12962 in January-February.

In February, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4L ranked 2nd, 4th and 8th respectively, with sales of 11303, 9929 and 6971 respectively. In other words, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the only model in the BBA luxury brand camp that sells more than 10,000 vehicles.

Red Flag H5 entered the top five again in February, ranking fifth with sales of 9786 vehicles. Compared with other red flag models, the Red Flag H5 is positioned as a younger group and has become the representative of an independent medium-sized car because of its relatively friendly price, which currently ranges from 15.98 yuan to 225800 yuan. As of the end of February, Red Flag H5 accumulated sales of 24651 vehicles.

In addition to the above models, Tesla Model 3 and Wuling Xingguang PHEV also entered the list top10. Of this total, the Model 3 sold 7604 vehicles. For comparison, Tesla's retail sales in China in February were 30141 vehicles, with 22537 Model Y vehicles targeting medium-sized SUV, and Model 3 sales much lower than Model Y.

Wuling Xingguang PHEV sold 5647 vehicles in February, ranking last on the list. Wuling Xingguang PHEV went on sale in December 2023, and its current price is 8.88-105800 yuan. It mainly competes with BYD Qin PLUS DM-i (9.98-145800 yuan), Geely Galaxy L6 (11.58-149800 yuan), Changan Qiyuan A05 (8.99-132900 yuan) and other models in the car market. In comparison, Wuling Xingguang has more advantages in body size, coupled with the lower starting price is also in line with the market awareness of the Wuling brand, which is the reason why the car can be included in the user purchase list. Data show that as of the end of February, Wuling Xingguang PHEV accumulated sales of 15750 vehicles from January to February this year. As a new car, there are only 3 or so on the market, Wuling Xingguang PHEV has twice entered the list of medium-sized car sales top10 models, this performance is indeed remarkable in the car market, from the sales situation of the past few months on the market, Wuling Xingguang PHEV does have the potential of popular styles.

The above is the list of top10 models sold in February. Taken together, due to the impact of the Spring Festival holiday, the car market entered the traditional off-season in February, and most car companies' sales declined to varying degrees month-on-month. With the replacement of Maiteng, Passat and other models this year, and the intensified domestic price war, it is expected that the competition in the medium-sized car market will be more fierce at that time.
