Retail sales of passenger cars in April 2024 were 1.532 million, down 5.7 per cent from a year earlier and 9.4 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Among them, car sales were 711000, down 8.9% from the same period last year and 9.0% from the previous month.

According to the April top15 list of medium-sized sedan sales counted by Automotive Industry concern, five models sold more than 10,000 vehicles in April, namely Passat, BMW 3-Series, Maiteng, Accord and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

For comparison, seven models sold more than 10,000 models in March, namely Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Passat, Model 3, BMW 3-Series, Maiteng, Red Flag H5 and Audi A4L.

Compared with March, the ranking of the top 10 models also changed dramatically in April. Among them, Mercedes-Benz C-Class fell to No. 5 from the top in March, while Tesla Model 3 fell to No. 12 from No. 3 in March.

Tesla sold 5065 Model 3 vehicles in April, down 65.02% from the previous month. For comparison, the Model 3 ranked third on the list in March, with sales of 14481 vehicles. The Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X models are on sale on April 21, according to Tesla's official website. Among them, Model 3 dropped to 231900 yuan, a decrease of 14000 yuan, only involving price adjustment. Judging from the sales data, the price reduction failed to bring sales growth to Tesla China. Data show that Tesla sold 31421 vehicles in China in April, down 21.4% from a year earlier.

At present, the new high-performance all-drive version of the Model 3 has appeared in the latest application catalogue. the car has been pre-sold and is expected to be delivered in the third quarter at a pre-price of 335900 yuan in the Chinese market. As a high-performance version of Tesla Model 3, the new car is more sporty in appearance and will be powered by dual motors, namely the front induction motor (3D 3) and the rear permanent magnet synchronous motor (4D 2), and in the form of four-wheel drive, the maximum power of the front and rear motors is 137x265kW and the acceleration time of 0-100km/h is 3.1s, and the maximum speed is 261km/h.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales fell 49.24% month-on-month to 10508 in April. By comparison, Mercedes-Benz sold 20700 C-Class cars in March. In the BBA luxury brand camp, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4L are among the top 10. Among them, BMW 3-Series sales ranked second with 12205 vehicles, while Audi A4L ranked eighth with 8497 vehicles.

At present, the price range of Mercedes-Benz C-Class on sale is 33.32-380600 yuan, while that of the BMW 3-Series is 29.99-399900 yuan, and that of Audi A4L is 32.18-400800 yuan. Judging from the performance of model sales in April, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has lagged behind the BMW 3-Series.

In addition, the BMW i3 ranked last in the BBA with 4489 vehicles. The BMW i3, a medium-sized pure electric car owned by brilliance, went on sale in March 2023 at an official price of 349900 yuan. The car can be regarded as an all-electric version of the BMW 3-Series, produced at the BMW brilliance plant and sold only in the Chinese market. But compared with the BMW 3-Series, the BMW i3 has a slightly lower sense of existence.

The German duo Volkswagen Passat and Maiteng sold 16033 and 11892 vehicles respectively in April, ranking first and third respectively. The Passat and Maiteng are sister cars to each other, but Passat sales are slightly better. After 2024, Passat topped the list in January (22313), February (11641) and April, respectively, and was replaced by Mercedes-Benz C-Class in March to 19446.

Fourth on the list was Accord, which sold 10569 vehicles in April, while Camry and Teana both fell out of the top five to seventh and ninth respectively, with sales of 9323 and 8231 respectively. In the past, Accord, Camry and Teana have long accounted for a large share of the medium-sized sedan sector, but now that situation has changed. As for the reasons for the decline in sales, Automotive Industry concern believes that it is mainly related to the replacement of models and increased competition among models of the same level. Of course, the underperformance of Japanese brands in China is not limited to midsize cars. The retail share of Japanese brands was only 15.2 per cent in April, down 3.6 per cent from a year earlier and the lowest since 2013, according to the federation.

Among independent brands, Red Flag H5 sold 9785 vehicles in April, ranking sixth on the list. Compared with other Red Flag models, Red Flag H5 is positioned as a younger group and has become the representative of independent medium-sized cars because of its relatively friendly price. at present, the price range of the car is 15.98-225800 yuan. In addition, Red Flag E-QM5 also entered the top 10, ranking 10th with sales of 6493 vehicles. Hongqi E-QM5 went on sale in June 2021 and currently sells for between 16.58 and 239800 yuan.

In addition to the top 10, Seal DM-i, Cadillac CT5 and Deep Blue SL03 also entered the top 15, ranking 11th, 13th and 14th respectively, with April sales of 5071, 5038 and 4524 respectively.

That's a list of the top15 models that sold midsize cars in April. Generally speaking, due to factors such as price instability in the car market in April, consumers have a strong wait-and-see atmosphere. In April, passenger car sales in the overall car market declined to varying degrees compared with the same period last year, as the ranking of top15 models changed significantly compared with March. As Maiteng, Passat and other models ushered in a replacement this year, coupled with the intensified domestic price war, it is expected that the competition in the medium-sized car market will be more fierce at that time.
