AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)06/09 Report--

On June 5th Volvo released global car sales figures. Figures show that Volvo sold 68034 vehicles worldwide in May, up 13% from a year earlier, while new energy vehicle sales were 32768, up 37% from a year earlier, accounting for 48.16% of total sales. Among them, the sales of pure electric models and plug-in hybrid models were 17064 and 15704 respectively.

In terms of its models, the top three Volvo models sold in May were Volvo XC60, XC40 and EX30, with sales of 20507, 13640 and 11035 respectively.

Subdivided into major markets, Volvo sold 33252 vehicles in Europe in May, up 27% from the same period last year, including 22028 new energy models, up 34% from the same period last year. Accounting for 66.25% of the total European market sales, the total sales volume in January-May was 157160, an increase of 31% over the same period last year, of which 99799 were new energy models, up 34% from the same period last year. In addition, sales in the US market were 10153, down 5 per cent from a year earlier, but sales of plug-in hybrid models rose 113 per cent year-on-year to 3617, and cumulative sales from January to May were 51708, up 10 per cent from a year earlier.

As for the Volvo car market in China, data show that sales in China in May were 13934, down 1% from the same period last year. Among them, sales of new energy vehicles were 1303, up 10% from a year earlier. The cumulative sales of new energy vehicles from January to May were 64113, up 2% from the same period last year. Among them, sales of new energy vehicles were 4808, down 23% from the same period last year. Compared with the European market and the American market, the sales of new energy vehicles in China fell particularly in the first five months, and it is also the only market in the three major markets where new energy vehicles have declined.

Of course, there is a reason for Volvo's decline in new energy vehicles in the Chinese market. Most of the electric models currently sold in China, Volvo's second largest market, are still "oil-to-electricity" products, and the pace of launch and transformation of new energy products is not fast. In addition, the volume of new energy vehicles in the domestic market has intensified, which is also the reason why its sales are difficult to improve. Take April retail sales as an example, Volvo's highest sales of new energy vehicles in China is XC60 New Energy, with 340 vehicles, followed by S90 New Energy and XC40 New Energy with only 163and 38 respectively.

It is worth mentioning that although Volvo lacks bright spots in the new energy models in the Chinese market, the performance of the global car market is still relatively bright. Volvo sold 316559 vehicles worldwide from January to May, up 15 per cent from a year earlier, while new energy vehicles sold 139286, up 24 per cent from a year earlier, accounting for 44.00 per cent of total sales, according to official figures.

Volvo officials said the increase in sales in May was due to the strong performance of the European market and the launch of the all-electric small SUV EX30. It is understood that EX30 is Volvo's brand new pure electric small SUV, launched on May 19, the new car launched a total of four models, the price range is 200800-255800 yuan.

As a global car built for the global market, the car is based on SEA vast platform, the appearance of the continuation of the brand's iconic "Scandinavian design" style, basically similar to the overseas version, power to provide single-motor, dual-motor version of the car choice, of which, the single-motor version uses rear drive, maximum power 200kW (272hp), peak torque 343N ·m. Lithium iron phosphate version is equipped with 49kWh battery pack, CLTC battery life is 410km, ternary lithium rear drive version is equipped with 66kWh battery pack, CLTC life is 590km; four-wheel drive version uses front and rear motor output 115kW/ 200N ·m, rear motor output 200kW/ 343N ·m, comprehensive power 315kW, peak torque is 543N ·m, four-wheel drive version is also equipped with 66kWh battery pack, the maximum battery life is 540km.

According to the plan, Volvo's pure electric models will account for 50% of total sales by 2025 and will be completely transformed into an all-electric brand by 2030, eliminating all models with internal combustion engines. Judging from the goal of stopping the sale of fuel vehicles, Volvo is still very determined in the transformation of new energy, and it is unclear whether Volvo can achieve sales growth under the "radical" transformation strategy.

For its sales target for the year, Volvo said it would achieve 15% growth by the end of the year. "this month's sales figures are another indicator of Volvo's progress in achieving its sales target of at least 15 per cent growth in 2024," Bj ö rn Annwall, Volvo's chief commercial officer and deputy chief executive, said in the data report. The EX30 has quickly become one of the best-selling all-electric vehicles in Europe. "
