Retail sales in the domestic passenger car market were 1.767 million in June 2024, down 6.7 per cent from a year earlier and an increase of 3.1 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Of this total, retail sales of new energy vehicles were 856000, up 28.8 per cent year-on-year and 6.5 per cent month-on-month.

Judging from the retail sales list of new energy manufacturers in June, the top 10 car companies in the list are all common brands. they are BYD Automobile, Geely Automobile, Tesla China, Changan Automobile, ideal Automobile, Selis Automobile, GAC Eian, SAIC General Motors Wuling, Chery Automobile and Great Wall Automobile. The outstanding performer on the list is still Selis, which surged 633.3% year-on-year, followed by Chery with an increase of 225.2%. The three car companies, including Tesla China, GAC Ean and Great Wall Motor, all declined to varying degrees, down-20.1%,-26.5% and-7.8% respectively compared with the same period last year.

Specifically, GAC Ean fell 26.5 per cent to 33073 vehicles in June from a year earlier, making it the biggest drop on the list. GAC Ean is an automobile brand of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd., formerly known as GAC NE. As GAC GROUP's new energy brand, its sales have declined significantly since 2024, with cumulative sales of 161342 vehicles in the first half of the year, down 22.9% from the same period last year.

According to the plan, GAC Ean aims to sell 700000 vehicles this year, compared with a completion rate of 23.05 per cent in the first half of the year. From the data point of view, the overall sales performance of GAC Ean is under pressure. At present, Guangzhou Auto EA is selling four models, including AION S, AION Y, AION V and AION LX. On June 20, Guangzhou Auto EA officially released the second-generation AION V interior official picture, and announced the full use of the AION letter logo as the global logo of the brand. It is understood that the new car positioning compact SUV, based on AEP pure electric platform, the appearance of a new design concept, power using a single motor layout, equipped with permanent magnet synchronous motor maximum power for 150kW, equipped with lithium iron phosphate battery, the new car is expected to be on the market in July, after listing will compete with BYD Song PLUS EV, Xiaopeng G3, Polar Krypton X and other models. As for whether the listing of the new car can share part of the sales pressure for GAC Ean, it remains to be verified. ‍

Tesla China sold 59261 vehicles in June, down 20.1 per cent from a year earlier, while cumulative sales in the first half were 278317, down 5.4 per cent from a year earlier. Tesla's domestic models for sale include Model 3 and Model Y, of which Model Y accounts for the vast majority of total sales. Take June retail sales as an example. June Model Y sales were 41110, accounting for 69.37% of total sales. The number of TIMO3 was 18151. With the increase of internal volume prices, configurations and products of the same level of products accelerated by major independent brands, Tesla's market share in China has also declined. in order to maintain sales, Tesla launched a "five-year zero interest" preferential policy on July 1. compared with the standard annual rate of 2.5%, these preferential policies can save more than 20, 000 yuan of interest, which can also be regarded as a disguised price reduction, which is expected to stimulate consumer car purchase desire to some extent.

In addition to GAC Ean and Tesla China, Great Wall sales also fell in June, but narrowed compared with the previous two, down 7.8 per cent from a year earlier to 22735 vehicles, while cumulative sales increased in the first half of the year, up 48.5 per cent to 119068 vehicles from a year earlier. In contrast, Selis and Chery have seen particularly significant increases. Among them, Selis increased by 633.3% to 40822, with a cumulative sales of 180570, an increase of 599.3%; and Chery increased by 225.2% to 30279, with a cumulative sales of 118818, an increase of 187.2%.

Back at the top of the list, BYD continued to top the list with sales of 280095 vehicles in June, but BYD's growth has slowed as competition in the new energy vehicle market intensifies, with cumulative sales rising 20.3% to 1388458 vehicles year-on-year, with a market share of 33.8%. In addition, Geely Motor and Changan Automobile also entered the top five, ranking second and fourth respectively, with sales of 63530 and 48338 vehicles respectively, up 90.5% and 50.3% respectively from the same period last year.

The fifth place is ideal car, and it is also the only brand on the list in the "Wei Xiaoli" camp. According to the data, 47774 ideal cars were delivered in June, up 46.7 per cent from a year earlier. For reference, Xilai delivered 21209 cars, an increase of 98.09 percent over the same period last year, and Xiaopeng delivered 10668 vehicles, an increase of 23.76 percent over the same period last year.

In addition to the above-mentioned car companies, SAIC GM Wuling also entered the top 10, ranking seventh with sales of 32530 vehicles, an increase of 11.2 per cent over the same period last year, with cumulative sales of 212105 vehicles, an increase of 19.8 per cent and a market share of 5.2 per cent.

Judging from the overall sales in June and the first half of this year, the performance of new energy vehicles in the auto market is still relatively strong. According to the data, the cumulative retail sales of new energy vehicles in the first half of 2024 were 4.111 million, an increase of 33.1% over the same period last year, and the market penetration rate has reached 41.8%. With the end of the first half of the year, the new energy market will usher in a more fierce share battle after entering the second half of the year.
