Retail sales in the domestic passenger car market in the first half of 2024 were 9.839 million, up 3.2 per cent from a year earlier, according to the Federation of passengers. Of this total, car sales were 4.482 million, down 1.6 per cent from a year earlier. Among the subdivided models, according to the top15 list of medium-sized sedan sales counted by "Automotive Industry concern", there were 9 models selling more than 50, 000 vehicles in the first half of 2024, namely, Passat, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Maiteng, Model 3, Red Flag H5, Accord, Camry and Audi A4L. Passat is the only model on the list that sells more than 100000 vehicles.

In the first half of the year, Passat topped the list with sales of 103034 vehicles, while its sister model Maiteng ranked fourth with 76241. Passat and Maiteng are sister models to each other, and the two cars have achieved good market performance in medium-sized cars. Among them, Passat won the B-Class sales in 2016 and 2019, while Maiteng won the B-Class sales in 2017 and 2018, with annual sales of more than 200000 vehicles respectively. Passat and Maiteng's market position has also been shaken to a certain extent with the rise of independent brands. From the analysis of the latest sales situation in the first half of this year, as a classic representative of medium-sized cars, Passat's sales performance in the car market in the first half of the year is indeed good, and Maiteng is also impressive, but Passat's sales are still slightly better.

On July 9, the new FAW-Volkswagen Maiteng launched a total of three models with a price range of 17.99 yuan to 246900 yuan, compared with 18.69 yuan to 253900 yuan for the old model. According to the plan, the new generation of Passat models will also be launched this year, and sales of new cars may be further improved after the launch.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series ranked second and third, with sales of 81711 and 77161 respectively in the first half of the year. After entering 2024, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been at the top of the list many times, becoming the top-selling medium-sized car model, with sales of 20700 vehicles in March and 17000 in May. In the BBA luxury brand camp, Audi A4L lags significantly behind Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series, with sales of 54914 vehicles in the first half, ranking ninth on the list.

Tesla Model 3 ranked fifth, with sales of 70500 vehicles in the first half of the year. As a medium-sized sedan, the Model 3 also performs well in the car market, but its contribution to Tesla's total sales in China is far less than that of Tesla Model Y (with sales of 207817 vehicles, ranking first among medium-sized SUV models).

In the Japanese midsize sedan camp, Accord and Camry sold 66329 and 60450 cars respectively in the first half of the year, ranking seventh and eighth, while Teana, both of the top three in Japan, ranked 12th with sales of 38413 vehicles. In the past, the above three models have occupied a large share in the field of medium-sized cars for a long time, but with the increase in the selectivity of models of the same class and the development of domestic new energy vehicles, the three positions have been dealt a big blow. In particular, the Camry, which has just completed its replacement, has lost the top of the list many times this year.

In the first half of the year, Red Flag H5 also entered the top 10, ranking sixth with sales of 67147 vehicles. In addition, another red flag model, the red flag E-QM5, entered the 11th place with sales of 40243 vehicles.

Also in the top 10 was Wuling Xingguang, which sold 41443 vehicles in the first half of the year, ranking 10th on the list. As a new car, only about half a year on the market, Wuling Xingguang has entered the list of top10 models with medium-sized car sales, and this performance is indeed remarkable in the auto market. Wuling Xingguang PHEV went on sale in December 2023, with a price of 8.88-105800 yuan. It mainly competes with BYD Qin PLUS DM-i, Geely Galaxy L6, Changan Qiyuan and other models in the car market. "Automotive Industry concern" believes that as a new car, Wuling Xingguang has more advantages in body size, coupled with the lower starting price is also in line with the market awareness of the Wuling brand, which is also the main reason why the car can be included in the user purchase list.

In addition to the above models, Seal, Cadillac CT5 and Deep Blue SL03 also entered the top 15, with sales of 36806, 34457 and 30040 respectively. Among them, the seal is a model owned by BYD Ocean Network, which went on sale in July 2022 and sold for 20.98-286800 yuan at that time. It is understood that Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD Ocean Network sales Division, revealed that the current modified model of BYD Seal, the Seal 07EV, will be released in early August. The new car is based on the BYD e platform 3.0Evo, has an 800V high voltage system and offers lidar options, and is expected to improve in terms of smart driving and power performance.

These are the top 15 models on the list of medium-sized car sales in the first half of the year. No matter in the past or now, medium-sized cars have a greater influence in the car market, but with the innovation of the car market, the sales and share of models such as Camry and Accord, which have performed very strongly in this market segment in the past, have begun to decline, followed by the acceleration of the development of the new energy vehicle industry and the entry of more powerful new players. At that time, the pattern of the medium-sized car market may change more obviously.
