Retail sales in the domestic passenger car market were 1.72 million in July 2024, down 2.8 per cent from a year earlier and 2.6 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Of these, retail sales of new energy vehicles were 878000, up 36.9 per cent from the same period last year, 2.8 per cent month-on-month, and the domestic retail penetration rate was 51.0 per cent, breaking through 50 per cent on a monthly basis for the first time.

Judging from the retail sales list of new energy manufacturers in July, the top 10 car companies in the list are all common brands. they are BYD Automobile, Geely Automobile, ideal Automobile, Tesla China, Changan Automobile, SAIC General Motors Wuling, Cyrus Automobile, Chery Automobile, GAC Eian, and Zero cars. Among them, GAC Ean is the only car company with a year-on-year decline, down 27.1% to 32800 vehicles.

Judging from the list as a whole, GAC Aian sales declined in both July and the previous July, with sales falling 23.7 per cent to 194200 vehicles in the previous July compared with the same period a year earlier, with a market share of 3.9 per cent. As GAC GROUP's new energy brand, it has not been easy since 2024. According to the plan, GAC has a sales target of 700000 vehicles in 2024, with 27.74% of the target by July, which means it is almost impossible for GAC to meet the remaining 72.26% sales target in the next five months.

Selis cars, by contrast, were interesting, with sales rising 826.7 per cent year-on-year to 39600 in July and 631.5 per cent to 220100 in the previous July. Of course, the growth of Selis car sales is inseparable from the core brand-AITO. The models on sale in AITO include M5, M7 and M9. At present, the new M7 Pro declaration chart has appeared in the latest MIIT declaration catalogue. The new car will carry the basic version of HUAWEI ADS, with a pre-price range of 24.98-289800 yuan, and will go on sale on August 26th.

Chery also showed good growth in July, up 292.1 per cent from a year earlier to 33500, ranking eighth on the list, and 205.2 per cent year-on-year to 152300 in the previous July.

Back at the top of the list, BYD still topped the list, with sales of 311800 vehicles in July, up 35.0% from the same period last year, far surpassing other car companies. The cumulative sales in the first seven months were 1.7003 million, up 22.7% from the same period last year, with a market share of 34.1%. According to the plan, BYD has an annual sales target of 3.6 million vehicles in 2024, which is expected to meet the sales target on schedule.

Ideal cars made it into the top three, with sales of 51000 vehicles in July, up 49.4% from a year earlier, an all-time high for monthly delivery. Cumulative sales in the first seven months were 240000, up 38.5% from a year earlier. Also setting a record high for next month's delivery are zero-running cars, which delivered more than 20, 000 cars for two months in a row, compared with 22100 in July, up 54.12% from a year earlier, ranking 10th on the list. Cumulative sales in the first seven months were 108800, up 84.9% from a year earlier, but failed to make it into the top 10. Lulai, Xiaopeng and Najia were all excluded from the list, with sales of 20500, 11100 and 11000 respectively in July.

Geely Motor, Tesla China and Changan Automobile all entered the top five, with sales of 57200, 46200 and 43600 respectively, up 62.8%, 47.1% and 23.9% respectively over the same period last year.

SAIC GM Wuling ranked sixth on the list, with sales of 41900 vehicles, up 20.3% from a year earlier, with most of its sales coming from Hongguang MINIEV and Wuling colorful fruit. Retail data show that Hongguang MINIEV sold 15800 vehicles in July and Wuling colorful fruit sold 14500 vehicles.

Overall, the performance of a number of auto companies in the auto market in July was relatively strong. Data show that from January to July 2024, the cumulative retail sales of new energy vehicles in the market was 4.989 million, an increase of 33.8% over the same period last year, and the following new energy market will usher in a more fierce battle for share.
