Retail sales in the domestic passenger car market were 2.109 million in September, up 4.5 per cent from a year earlier and 10.6 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Of these, car sales were 974200, an increase of 3.9 per cent over the same period last year, while medium and large sedan sales were 128000, accounting for 6.1 per cent of total domestic car sales.

According to the top15 list of retail sales of large cars in September, according to the statistics of "Automotive Industry concern", there were four models selling more than 10,000 vehicles in September, namely, BYD Han, Audi A6L, Xiaomi SU7, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, with sales of 19070, 16112, 13559 and 13262 respectively.

Judging from the four models with sales of more than 10,000 vehicles, all four models have performed well, especially Xiaomi SU7, a new car that has been on the market for only half a year or so, has been among the top three retail sales of medium and large sedans, which has delivered more than 10,000 cars for four consecutive months, with cumulative sales of 69790 vehicles by the end of September. Earlier, Xiaomi Group Chairman Lei Jun said in a live broadcast that Xiaomi cars had added more than 4000 lock orders a week after September, and the delivery cycle had been scheduled for after February next year, with a target production and delivery volume of more than 20000 vehicles in October.

In the BBA camp, Audi A6L, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series ranked second, fourth and fifth respectively, with sales of 16112 vehicles, 13262 vehicles and 7692 vehicles respectively. In other words, BMW 5-Series lags far behind the former two. The same is true of the previous September sales, which were 127942, 100106 and 60137 respectively.

The Biadihan family topped the list with 19070, including 11562 plug-in hybrids and 7508 pure electric cars. Han is a flagship model of BYD, and it is also a volume model of BYD. On Sept. 9, 2025 BYD Han launched a total of 9 models with a price range of 16.58-235800 yuan, including 2025 Han DM-i with a price range of 16.58-225800 yuan and 2025 Han EV with a price range of 17.98-235800 yuan. As a modified model, the change of the new car is very obvious, the biggest highlight is that the power is equipped with DM5.0 technology, and the configuration will be upgraded to DiPilot 300, Yunxing-C and rear five-link suspension, which is the first high-order intelligent driving assistance model equipped with lidar.

Other top10 models on the list include Polar Krypton 001, Changan Qiyuan A07, eπ 007, Lecker Z10 and Galaxy E8, with sales of 7432, 4347, 3274, 2819 and 2718 respectively. Among them, the Lock Z10, which was launched on September 5, is a brand-new model of Lock, with a total of 5 models with a time-limited price range of 19.68-288800 yuan. Three power options are provided in terms of power, among which, the 702km four-wheel drive Ultra version has a maximum motor power of 580kW and a maximum torque of 810Nm; the entry version has a maximum power of 200kW and a maximum torque of 343Nm The maximum power of the motor is 310 kilowatts and the maximum torque is 440 Nm.

Other models, including the Zhijie S7, Volvo S90, Zhiji L6, popular Xinghai S7 and Avita 12, all entered the top 15 on the list, with sales of 2522, 2336, 2284, 2192 and 2156 respectively, with similar sales in September.

Overall, among the top 10 models in the mid-September large car retail sales list, there are six independent brands, all of which are electric cars, while there are only four joint venture brands, of which three luxury brands are fuel vehicles. Nowadays, whether it is the medium and large car segment or other market segments, the competition in the car market is very fierce, especially between independent brands and joint venture brands, new energy vehicles and fuel workshops. With the rapid rise of independent brands and under the tuyere of new energy vehicles, the advantages of joint venture brands are becoming less and less obvious, and the golden era of joint venture brands is gone forever, especially since 2024. The major car companies have entered the cruel "knockout" stage, and the decline of German-Japanese joint venture brands has become a consensus, which also indicates that there will not be too many mainstream joint ventures that can stay on the card table in the future.
