A YouTube video believed to be a big party hosted by Carlos Ghosn at Versailles in Paris on March 6, 2014 drew auditors' attention to Renault Nissan alliance spending.

Carlos Ghosn and his supporters said the party was held to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Renault Nissan Union, but it was held on his 60th birthday. Of the 160 guests present, Nissan or Renault had only a small number of executives.

After his arrest in Tokyo in November, the video undermined Ghosn's efforts to improve his public image of embezzlement, accusing him of concealing tens of millions of dollars in annual salary. Ghosn is still being detained in Japan after being rearrested in April on charges relating to Oman payments. He declared that he was innocent of all charges. He and his lawyers described his arrest as a "palace coup" orchestrated by Nissan executives, who rejected plans to further integrate the company with Renault, including a possible merger.
