AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)05/19 Report--

GM reportedly sold three glass skyscrapers in downtown Detroit when it restructured its operations and cut spending in 2018. The largest US carmaker is discussing selling its glass tower complex to billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Another person familiar with the matter said that the plan had been discussed in the group, but GM did not look for other buyers. In an internal email last week, GM declined to comment on the discussion and stressed that "significant renovation and revitalization will be made to the facilities around headquarters".

"as a company headquartered in downtown Detroit, we have regular meetings and consultations with senior executives within the group to conduct business at headquarters," GM said. " "We will not disclose the details of these conversations, nor will we comment on specific remarks and speculation."

Bedrock, the real estate company owned by Gilbert, said in response to the incident that GM had been investing heavily around its headquarters, including the public garden of the Marriott Hotel opposite its headquarters and the Detroit-Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. The plant plans to stop production by January next year, pending negotiations with UAW this year.

GM will launch $6 billion-a-month cost-saving measures in 2020, including closing five North American plants and cutting up to 14000 jobs, while GM was rumored to be selling its headquarters in 2009, but GM was in bankruptcy at the time. But no sale was carried out at the time. Detroit's big three automakers have been tightening their belts at the same time as the global economic downturn, and the renewed sale of their headquarters may be just one of many rumors. However, the sale of the headquarters building will not only damage the image of General Motors, but also cause unnecessary impact on investors and users, and deal a blow to the weak US auto industry.
