In Hangzhou on May 20, electric car start-up Ulai and carmaker Guangzhou Automobile Group unveiled their joint venture's first brand, "Co-creation". Both sides said the brand would operate independently and was unveiled with a new concept model.

The model, which will be produced at GAC GROUP's factory, is said to be fully charged and can travel for more than 600km. Details of the new car have not yet been released, and Liao Bing, chief executive of GAC Lai, said the new model will go on sale in China in 2020.

The cooperation between GAC and NIO is easily reminiscent of the cooperation between BYD and Daimler 10 years ago. Not long ago, BYD and Daimler jointly injected 300 million yuan of blood into Tengli. Nevertheless, Tengli still lost 888 million yuan in 2018 and 43.834 million yuan in the first quarter of this year. Can the joint venture brand of GAC Wei Lai avoid the bumpy situation of Tengli?

In December 2017, GAC GROUP and Xilai jointly funded the establishment of Guangzhou Automobile Future New Energy Co., Ltd., which was officially established in April 2018. After that, Guang Qi Wei Lai did not take any other action and gradually left the public eye. In the future, vehicles will be delivered one after another to carry out offline supporting construction, until September Wei came to New York to be listed in the United States, GAC still has no news in the future.

In January of this year, GAC GROUP general manager Zeng Qinghong and Feng Xingya came to GAC Wei for research to make it come back and forth to the public. Both GAC and NIO emphasize that the new company is a "joint venture" unlike previous joint ventures, which makes the brand name directly convey the nature of the company.

According to Liao Bing, GAC NIO is a "deep integration of automotive Internet user enterprises" while the new brand is not a traditional automobile manufacturing enterprise, but an ecological platform for open construction, sharing results and travel industry integration. At the same time, he also stressed that GAC Qilai is a light asset operating enterprise.

In September, GAC's board of directors passed the "proposal on the GAC Xilai GN01 model project" and agreed to put the GN01 model into production, with a total project of 306 million yuan. And the outside world has been rumored that GAC NIO will not immediately do a car to break the story.

Guang Qi Wei is the same as Jianghuai NIO before, NIO is responsible for the design of the whole vehicle, while Guangzhou Automobile is responsible for the processing and after-sale of the whole vehicle. What has not been recognized by NIO is still the issue of production qualification, and only cooperation with Jianghuai is left after the plan to build its own production line ran aground.

NIO has been promoting itself as a high-end new energy brand, and it has been taboo for outsiders to use Jianghuai NIO to report. Try to avoid publicity so as not to devalue the brand because of Jianghuai. In contrast, the cooperation with GAC is not too embarrassing, and on the one hand, GAC is also willing to cooperate with this new enterprise. NIO has independently developed three-power system, OTA and intelligent driving system, which will get software help for GAC which will soon join the production of new energy vehicles.

But the initial momentum in the endorsement of the two major brands, defined as a high-end new energy brand, in exchange for the product stagnant update, sales decline year after year in a dismal situation. The birth stage of Co-creation is at a good time. It is common in the industry to form a consensus on the development of pure electric power in the future. at the same time, Guang Qi Wei will take the initiative to keep a low profile, leaving enough room for the development of joint venture in the future.

At the press conference, leaders of both sides came to the platform one after another, including Li Bin, chairman of NIO. To a certain extent, it also reflects the importance that shareholders of both sides attach to the joint venture.

The second half of this year is the listing period of Xilai ES6 and GAC AION LX, which is the biggest problem for the joint venture that delivers vehicles in the first half of 2020 to survive between the two new energy brands. At the same time, how to avoid homogenization with the models of the two major brands will be a new problem.
