Last week, US President Donald Trump decided to postpone tariffs on the EU auto industry, which is a good opportunity for EU carmakers to catch their breath. But Hakan Samuelson, chief executive of Volvo, Geely's luxury brand, said a trade war between the world's two largest political forces would be worrying

"We are putting into production in the United States, and the US government wants us to put cars into production locally to reduce the US trade deficit," adding that the determining factor for Volvo to build a plant in the United States in 2015 is not the issue of tariffs. We produce 150000 vehicles in the United States, and half of them are exported. Among them, cars made in the United States and imported will be sold together. Volvo's sales data in 2018 was 98263 vehicles, accounting for 20% of the total sales data in 2018.

Mr Semelson cited the trade war between the US and China in mid-February, citing a reason why Volvo's operating margin fell to 5.6 per cent last year from 6.7 per cent in 2017. Tensions between the United States and China have led Volvo to adjust production, and Chinese-made Volvo XC60 and S60L models are no longer sold to the United States because of the additional 27.5% tariff burden.

Mr Semelson said Volvo, which is now focused on transformation, would postpone its previous plan to raise shares publicly. "We are focused on revitalizing Volvo," he said.

Volvo has a higher say than it does at Ford after Ford sold Volvo to Zhejiang Geely Holdings. As a department but not a company, Volvo now has its electric high-performance brand Polar, as well as its participation in the management of emerging brand Lecker.

Asked about Volvo's role as a key player in mobile travel solutions, Mr Semelson said: "We don't need to be too scientific and digital, we should make it easier for customers to travel. Customers want to enjoy travel in an unfettered way. "
