Tesla has been increasing his income by selling carbon credits to other automakers since 2010, according to foreign media reports. So far, the sales of emission permits have generated nearly $2 billion for Tesla, and such transactions are mostly conducted in secret.

California has a mandatory rule that requires automakers to sell zero-emission cars and account for a certain percentage of the state's total car sales. California is the largest car market in the United States.

If carmakers do not sell enough pollution-free cars, they will have to buy carbon credits from competitors such as Tesla to make up the difference. Similar credit systems are developed and managed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTAS).

The two auto groups, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors, are the biggest buyers of Tesla's emission credits sales business. In February, GM and Fiat Chrysler disclosed for the first time to Delaware that they had reached an agreement with Tesla to buy emissions credits. Both GM and FCA said they bought the credits from Tesla to protect themselves from possible future regulatory changes.

Tesla earned $216 million from the sale of emission permits in the first quarter of this year. Tesla's sales of carbon credits were $103 million in 2018, $280 million in 2017 and $215 million in 2016.

Tesla's sales of carbon credits are currently limited to the US and California, but it also has a chance to earn revenue from sales in Europe in the future, where stricter emissions regulations are being implemented. In April, Fiat Chrysler said it would pay Tesla about 1.8 billion euros to buy carbon dioxide credits over the next three years to meet emissions requirements and avoid heavy fines in the United States and Europe.
