According to foreign media reports, French Finance Minister Runo Lemaire said that in order to promote the alliance plan between Renault and Nissan, Renault will reduce its 15% stake.

Speaking to foreign media, French Finance Minister Runaud Lemaire said: "We can reduce the government's stake in Renault. As long as at the end of the process we have a stronger automotive sector and a stronger alliance between Nissan and Renault, it's not a problem."

France, as Renault's largest shareholder, owns 15% of Renault's shares, has representatives on Renault's board of directors and has dual voting rights. Renault Nissan has a 43% voting stake in Nissan and a 15% non-voting stake in Renault.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) proposed a merger to Renault because Nissan opposed the merger of Renault and Fiat for fear that the merger would damage the partnership. Nissan will have little qualms about a renault-fiat merger, as long as the alliance remains in place for decades.

So the French government will decide to postpone a decision on the proposed merger of Renault and Fiat Chrysler (FCA), and they will fly to Tokyo for further discussions with Nissan. However, Fiat decided to withdraw the merger proposal for Renault on a provisional basis, arguing that the French government had interfered too much with the merger plan.

Since then, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio has publicly criticized the French government for blocking the merger of Renault and Fiat Chrysler. Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Luigi Di Maio said government intervention was responsible for the failure of the merger, and Renault was not satisfied with it. It was an open market operation that would have benefited Italy and Italians."

In the end, the merger plan between Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and Renault could only end in failure. The performance of both sides in 2019 is not optimistic. In the first quarter of 2019, Fick Group's revenue fell 5% year-on-year to € 24.5 billion; pre-tax profit fell 29% year-on-year to € 1.07 billion. Renault Group's revenue for the first quarter of 2019 was 12.527 billion euros, down 4.8%.
