According to the national passenger car sales data released on the Federation's official website in May 2019, the cumulative sales of narrow passenger cars in May was about 1.582 million, up 4.8 per cent from the previous month and down 12.5 per cent from the same period last year. From the perspective of the three major market segments, car sales showed a downward trend, with car sales of about 805000 vehicles, down 13.2% from a year earlier. SUV sales were about 669000 vehicles, and 9.6% year-on-year sales of about 108000 MPVs, down 22.9% from a year earlier. In addition, the cumulative sales performance in the first five months is not optimistic.

At present, the most difficult is the dealers, because they are worried that they will not be able to digest the inventory of the five countries, and the channel prices are also gradually confused. Auto shows around the country broke out in May, with the national five-year clearance, terminal prices have no bottom line, leading to a month-on-month rise in retail sales.

Su Hui, vice president of the China Automobile Circulation Association, said: "after entering 2019, passenger car sales seem to be on the slide." From the perspective of the data, it does confirm this point.

Recently, more new energy vehicles have been launched, and the mileage, design and configuration of new cars have improved significantly, promoting a better increase in the subsidy transition period.

The wholesale new energy passenger car market reached a good sales level of 97000 units in May, up 5.8 per cent from April and 5.4 per cent year-on-year. This is a better embodiment of new energy passenger vehicles gradually getting rid of policy dependence. From January to May this year, 442000 new energy narrow passenger cars were sold nationwide, an increase of 58.0% over the same period last year.

According to the major car companies, in May 2019, the top three companies in terms of narrow passenger car sales were SAIC General Motors, FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen, and their sales were basically the same. China's independent brands, only Geely Motor and SAIC Wuling, ranked fifth and sixth in May with comprehensive sales of 85000 and 71000 respectively. Japanese cars performed well in May, with Guangzhou Auto Honda and Dongfeng Honda ranked seventh and ninth respectively, FAW Toyota and Guangzhou Automobile Toyota ranked eighth and 10th respectively.

In terms of various models, Xuanyi contractors topped the list of cars in May, surpassing the second place by 2030, down 6.2% from the same period last year, while Volkswagen Longyi, which ranked second, was only 901 vehicles behind the third Toyota Corolla, down 7.1% from the same period last year. In the data, only Audi made the list, with cumulative sales of 12102 vehicles, up 9.2% from the same period last year.

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the all-China Federation of passengers, believes that the pace of production and marketing in June will be relatively chaotic and, to a certain extent, affect the market competition pattern in July and August. Cui Dongshu also believes that in order to stabilize sales, local governments that implement the sixth national standard ahead of time should give national five vehicles a three-month transition period.

The environment is complex in the second half of the year, and there is more room for economic and policy flexibility. It is suggested that manufacturers lower their short-term production and marketing targets, wait and see the environment and policy changes, and then revise the annual plan reasonably.
