Renault-Nissan has signed an exclusive agreement with Waymo, Google's Alphabet self-driving unit, to form a three-way partnership to develop self-driving mobile travel services that use self-driving cars to transport passengers and goods in France and Japan.
Renault said the three parties would jointly assess market opportunities and study commercial, legal and regulatory issues related to driverless transport services. The company added that the alliance would initially focus on providing self-driving and delivery services in France and Japan, but could expand to other markets excluding China in the future.
At the same time, Renault and Nissan will set up joint ventures in Japan and France. 50% of each of the shares is expected to be injected into Waymo, and the three parties will set up joint committees in France, Japan and the United States, but the cooperation plan has not yet announced a specific amount and timetable. This is the first agreement signed by Waymo, which aims to provide automakers with technology and services to help them build their own self-driving cars.
Relations between Renault and Nissan have been strained since the former Nissan CEO "Ghosn" was arrested in Japan last year on suspicion of corruption. But the two sides put aside disagreements on cooperation in self-driving, and the two companies said they would set up a joint venture to focus on self-driving mobile services.
Nissan CEO Hiroshi Nishikawa said: through Renault and Nissan's automotive industry expertise and strategic partner Waymo's expertise in self-driving, both sides can explore new opportunities and expand their portfolios.
