Many owners of Tesla responded that the mileage of the vehicle dropped sharply from 30 miles to 12 miles in a very short time.

One of the owners said that the mileage of his 2014 Model S 85 was 247 miles before May 13, but the range was only 217 miles after an update, a drop of 11% in five weeks. The owner has also been charting the decline in battery capacity of his Model S over the past 100000 miles or so, but has found that the recent decline is quite significant.

However, the Tesla service center said this was a "normal degradation" of the battery pack. Tesla officially said that the reduction in mileage is due to the update of battery software. The goal of this update is to "protect the battery and improve battery life". As a result, the mileage of "a small number of car owners" is shortened.

At this point, only the Model S and Model X models with 85 kWh battery packs, which were discontinued in 2016, seem to have been affected. The decline in mileage occurred after the update to Tesla 2019.16.1 and 0.2.

Tesla also said that this only affected a "small group", but according to the report of car owners, the forum and social media said that many car owners were affected.

It seems that Tesla used a new algorithm to update the battery management system, according to some variables, limited the full load capacity of some vehicles to extend battery life. It is not clear what variables cause this restriction.
