The American Automobile Association (AAA) recently tested the range of BMW i3s, Chevrolet Bolt EV, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S and Volkswagen Golf Electric version with warm air system.

The AAA tests under two conditions, the first being tested with a heating system, in which case the mileage of the tested vehicle has dropped by an average of 41%, meaning that the range of the Chevrolet Bolt has been reduced to 140km (225km).

The second condition is to test whether outdoor temperature has a negative effect on the range of pure electric vehicles without heating system. The results show that at minus 6.67 degrees Celsius, just starting the electric car will lose 12% of the mileage. In the case of the Chevrolet Bolt, mileage will be reduced from 238km (383km) to 209km (336km).

The American Automobile Association analyzed the reasons after the test, saying that because diesel locomotives can use engine residual temperature to heat when outdoor temperatures drop, while electric vehicles can only rely on batteries for energy heating, this has led to a sharp decline in the range of electric vehicles in the winter.

Although the negative impact of low temperature on the battery life of electric vehicles has been recognized by the majority of electric car owners, from the current technology, even Tesla has been "infringed" by low temperature. Earlier, Tesla Model 3 owners complained on social media and online forums about the problems with their electric cars due to cold weather, especially the sharp reduction in battery life.
