There are different views that Tesla's safety data are not convincing to the public. The main crux of the problem is that the environment of Autopilot system is usually highway, not urban driving environment. Obviously, the accident rate of the latter is higher. In addition, in the data comparison, the data provided by NHTSA also includes many old vehicles, the average accident rate of which is obviously higher than that of the new model launched by Tesla.

Since October last year, Tesla has taken the initiative to release quarterly safety data in order to provide safety information to the public, but in the past year, accidents involving spontaneous combustion of Tesla electric vehicles have occurred frequently in China. In July this year, Tesla added vehicle fires to the safety data and decided to publish them annually.

According to the data released by Tesla, there was a fire for every 270 million kilometers of Tesla's vehicle from 2012 to 2018. According to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association and the United States Department of Transportation, there is a fire accident for every 30.4 million kilometers traveled by American vehicles. From this point of view, Tesla's fire frequency is about 1x10 of the total fire frequency. Tesla also stressed that these fire data also include fires caused by arson and other external forces unrelated to vehicles, accounting for about 15 per cent.

Although Tesla said that "there may not be a fire in a quarter", domestic expert statistics show that in 2018, Tesla had 11 fire accidents at home and abroad, an average of about one per month.

The fire in the underground parking garage in Shanghai in April this year has aroused great concern in the community. A Tesla Model S parked in an underground parking lot suddenly caught fire and ignited several cars around it. Two months later, Tesla released the results of the fire investigation. "according to a preliminary judgment, the accident was caused by a single battery module failure in the front of the vehicle," but obviously this explanation was not convincing.
