The sharing economy has developed rapidly in recent years, such as shared bikes and electric cars, and some more developed first-tier cities have even launched shared cars. Daimler Group of Germany, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has also launched the urban service of car-sharing Car2go, which can rent cars through App by providing Mercedes-Benz CLA, GLA and Smart cars. However, the service has recently been hacked and more than 100 Car2go shared cars have been stolen.

It is understood that the location where the shared car was stolen took place in Chicago, USA. The cars were stolen because hackers hacked into Car2go's App to rewrite programs and data and steal shared cars, including Mercedes-Benz CLA, GLA small SUV, and Smartfortwo subcompact cars.

Previously, Car2go's entire process of manually vetting users took a day or two, but officials said it was not conducive to attracting new users. Later, Car2go enabled automatic approval to simplify registration, and the Daimler Car2go Mercedes-Benz stopped using the manual audit process in April this year.

Recently, however, Car2go suddenly noticed a surge in rentals of Mercedes-Benz CLAs and GLA SUV on the platform, and the rental time of these cars was much longer than the company's average 90-minute drive. Through electronic maps, Car2go headquarters employees found that dozens of cars had gone beyond the company's business coverage and gathered in a few blocks west of Chicago. When Car2go employees went to recover the car, the "car thieves" refused to return it, claiming that the car belonged to them.

After Car2go failed to recall the vehicle independently, it turned to the Chicago police for help. The day after the Chicago police were involved, more than 20 people suspected of illegally occupying cars were arrested. It is understood that a total of 75 cars were damaged this time. So far, all the vehicles have been found, but the seats, doors and other parts of some cars have been removed. Car2go then completely stopped its business in Chicago because it could not tell the difference between normal users and "thieves".

Car2go, a subsidiary of Germany's Daimler Group, was established in 2008 and provided car-sharing services in Chicago, USA in April 2018. It is the 25th city of Car2go in the world and the 10th in North America. Currently, the number of Car2go-shared cars in Chicago has reached 400.
